Indiana Rail Road’s technological advances earn award

Indiana Rail Road Co. (IRR) recently received TechPoint's 2005 Mira Award in the distribution and logistics category. The awards recognize Indiana firms’ technological achievements.

TechPoint honored the 155-mile short line for being on the “cutting edge” of technology for nearly a decade, according to a prepared statement. IRR was among the first railroads to employ remote-control locomotives, remote train monitoring and computer-aided train dispatching systems, solar-powered and remotely operated switches, and Automatic Equipment Identification readers.

“We have adopted an aggressive and innovative approach to using applied technology to provide excellent service and pricing for our customers, while increasing safety procedures,” said IRR President and Chief Executive Officer Tom Hoback. “We are in the process of testing several other cutting-edge technologies, such as RMI car tracing and positive train control.”

A non-profit organization located in Indianapolis, TechPoint presents the awards annually to promote technology's role in Indiana's economy.
