RJ Corman coal trains
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, May 18, 2005 8:20 PM
I am going out to Cresson, PA. in June and I heard that RJ Corman delivers coal trains to the NS at Cresson. Does anyone know what days and times this occurs?? I would like to get pictures of their locomotives. Thanks for any info on this.

I have gotten pictures of them coming off their line their at cresson. The train was led by a RJ corman Tunnel motor and had a high hood 3 units back. To answer your question I don't think there is a set time. When i saw them I heard them on the radio an hour before I saw them at cresson because NS made them wait. Hopefully David Williams from the NS Altoona yahoo group while find this. He's is very knowledgable on the area. I'll post a link in the group to try and get someone that can give you a definitive answer.
Andrew
P.s. If you want to check out the pictures I took you can go to my link in my profile and they are under the Altoona trip 2 page

I will be in Cresson in June also...I'm one of the "frequent flyers" at The Station Inn, since my family is from the West Slope....As far as how often Corman comes into Cresson, there is no set schedule.....just the luck of the draw...There are two separate Corman Lines that come into Cresson...One heads West and then North out of Cresson to Clearfield...in fact, the trackage parallels Old 22 for a bit before diverging away....The other line is the Irvona Secondary which diverges from the NS Main just railroad East of the Cresson Engine facility.....and then parallels Rte 53 North to Ashville, and then to a loadout in Fallentimber.....A sign that something will happen at Cresson will be the presence of empty hoppers on '5 West' which is the extreme far track across from the Station Inn and is a siding. If you see empties there, they will not be there for long..maybe a day or two at most....before they are picked up by a Corman crew and taken up one of the Branches..Corman and NS Engines are used to haul trains up and down the Corman Line to the loadouts......If you see loaded hoppers on that siding, they've been dropped off for NS to pick up to take out onto the Mainline and will usually get NS Roadpower on one end and a helper set on the other, especially if heading East on the Main. There are a couple of discussion groups specific to the area and have members on them that live there and actively chase these Corman trains, as well as other action in the area. Check out NSWestSlope@Yahoogroups.com and NSAltoonaJohnstown@Yahoogroups.com Someone on either group can fill you in on whatever you need to know.....Dave Williams @ nsaltoonajohnstown@yahoogroups.com

Another note, if you carry a Scanner...160.845 is the Corman Frequency for the lines out of Cresson....160.800 is the NS Frequency for the Mainline. If you see empties on the siding at Cresson, and hear chatter on the Corman frequency, listen in to that frequency...You'll hear Corman Crews talking if they are in town ready to pick up the empties....again, power is not always dedicated Corman.....NS`Power can also be mixed in or be solid NS power...Often, on the empty trains, especially ones heading up the Irvona, power will be placed on both ends....because,if it is a Fallentimber train, the train will be split in half, loaded and brought back down to Cresson in two sections, which is why two sets of power, one on each end, usually head up to Fallentimber with the empties.. The one empty train becomes two shorter loaded trains....Once the loads get back to Cresson, the two sections are usually recombined into one for NS to pick up and take out onto the Main....Dave Williams @ nsaltoonajohnstown@yahoogroups.com
