Was there a particular reason why Southern Pacific never washed their engines?

For the same reason the BNSF never seems to wa***heirs! No, seriously, I seem to remember reading that the reason the SP units always seemed dirty was that they had so very many tunnels on their lines that the exhaust smoke and oil vapor just naturally stuck to the sides, not to mention that the grey color looked dirty even when it was not very dirty.

Go***hose SP engines did look good dirty look like a working RR.Now Cotton Belt was always they seem a lot cleaner.
