This afternoon I shall board the Great Norhern Flyer at the soon to be replaced waterfront station in Seattle. In 70 hours i shall arrive in the windy city Chicago where I will change trains and board the Pennsylvania Flyer for New York just in time for my sailing on the Cunard Lines Campania to Southhampton. A ten day voyage on the first trans-atlantic liner to abandon sails altogether and rely strictly on steam for the long voyage. This will be my first time to travel so extensively. It took me four hours on the horse drawn streetcar to arrive at the Station in Seattle. The crossing of the Cascades will take place in darkness and consume most of the night. By the time I awake tomorrow I shall be fast approaI still can't approaching Spokane.
It seems unbeleiveable that I can leave Seattle one day and fifteen days later be in London. What marvel's the trains and mighty ship that will whisk me so far in such a short period of time. Why only just a few years ago I can't imagine making such a trip the sailing ships were at the mercy of the winds so one never knew when he would get to England and today the mighty steam pwered ship will have me their in ten days from the time I leave New York. Well must finish getting ready for the trip Ta Ta for now.

My advice, CopCar, is to go ahead and farm in Adams County. It's great land, I'm betting the climate will be relatively benign for several years to come, and you will enjoy living on the Front Range before it gets discovered in a big way. Farming should prove fairly lucrative, especially if a large European war breaks out in about a decade or so.
I' m betting a national park will get established up around Estes Park, so you may want to look into putting a little land aside up there.

I may just have to stockpile some land. Perhaps some water rights would be a good investment, too? [8D]

Well, if you are going to do that, Mr. Harmon, please look up Henry Ford, try to persuade him that the internal combustion thing will never work and suggest he look into the world wide telegraphic web.

Dan,
Need a publicist?(Not what I normally do but that's pretty much all I've been doing today. Besides it's 1905 right?) I could be in charge of helping with your party platform, arrange photo ops etc. What do you think?

Mike, er I mean, Miguel.

Chances are that in 1905 that photo op will be off the back of a private observation car. Makes me want to run for something!

Dan I hate to tell you this, but those newfangled Brazillian submarines are also made of rubber, and they float even when they pull the plugs out and would be as good a target as a Rubber Ducky in a bathtub...now as for me, with my armada of Newfangled Zepplins (thanks to an exclusive deal with the Count (after a few months playing the ponies with my sports records history book) will be paying a visit from 10,000 feet over your antiquated tin navy and dropping a few souveneers for you...Aaargh! In 1905,it is too early to see cab forwards or streamlined Daylights. My favorite loco( GS 4 4449 )will not be built for another 36 years. What to do.I will go to Ogden and buy a ticket to San Francisco.I will ride over the original line through Promontory,as the Lucin cutoff won't be built until 1908.I will marvel at the steady stream of freights running over Donner with the small locos in use at that time, requiring numerous helpers.Maybe as many as 4 or 5 engines per train.I will enjoy crossing Carqinez straits on the carferry, then the ride into Oakland Mole, finishing the trip with a ferry crossing of the bay ending at the San Francisco Ferry terminal[:)].

Well I would be avoiding Zepplins and the like for sure! Would be on (hopefully) a regular job on the Rock Island. lets see 33 now baring getting killed by boiler explosion horrible accidents disease etc etc I would have 18 or so years on the line ( at a time when firemen hired out wayyyyyyyyy young of course child labor laws what are those?) so 5 or so years of firing wham engine service, of course baring all that I said before I would be in bed already ( old fashioned them new fangled oilless lights dang nabit) and the windows would be open so we could get a breeze in the hot as hell house, probably have put another block of ice in the ice box, made sure ma had put the cook fire in the stove to a nice bank ( all those years firing) and be all settled in bed after saying good night to ma and the 10 youngins ( kids are good for something like doing house hold chores and sending them to family members farms to help out) Arguing with the oldest boy cause he wants to join some revolution in Brazil you know all the stuff I am not doing now! Great execise man give me today I wouldnt mind the time machine as long as I had all my shots!

Yes we are on time but this is yesterdays train

Senior Dan

My new Zeppelins just happen to use this new gas found here in the US called helium, so dont get any ideas about lighted objects or anything, fly at 10,000 feet and there is no real threat from those barely flyable boxkites them Wright Bro's are puttering around in....money is no object for my aerial world conquest...you see my sports history book 2005 edition, lets me know who is going to win every baseball, football game and horse race... Hehehe so my funding source is a little more reliable than your banana crop!!!![:p]

espee: Surveyors from the yellow peril were already done in 1905 (they went thru Vegas in 1903, the construction crews were a little tardy.

If I were a 1905 railroad mudchicken in Colorado

If I were a Santa Fe Mudchicken, I'd be in the Arkansas Valley between Holly and Rock y Ford laying out branch lines to gather sugar beets north of the river for J. A. Noble.

If I were Colorado & Southern, I would be laying out connecting tracks for the wholy owned Denver & Interurban RR around Broomfield for J. R. Hess.

If I were Denver, Laramie and Western, I'd be starving somewhere between Utah Junction and Greeley. (Copcars' Adams County is all of 3 years old, broken out of Arapahoe County along with the City and County of Denver which is still smaller than Pueblo)

If I were Denver, Northwestern and Pacific, I'd be just finishing the line over Rollins Pass (Moffat Tunnel is 18-23 years away) and heading west with Horace Sumner to find out how to go Winter Park to the coal fields of Routt County

If I'm working for Union Pacific, I'm working on the new Northern District main track going from Denver through La Salle, Firestone, Frederick to the new coal mines and beet farms.

If I'm working for CB&Q, I'm relocating our Burlington, Missouri & Colorado main track to get it out the soon to be Barr Lake.

If I'm working for Colorado & Eastern, my struggling narrow gauge railroad just got through Berlin and is on its way to the Hanover Mine (coal)/ Scranton near a place to be called DIA a hundred years later.

If I'm Rock Island, I just laid out the McFerran Mine near Colorado Springs/Falcon and there are crews looking to lay out a line west from Liberal to Trinidad and up the Puratoire River Valley into the San Luis Valley,

If I'm Denver & Rio Grande working under J. A. McMurtrie and Bill deReymer , I'm busy laying out branches for CF&I (C&W Southern Division), a sugar company (the future San Luis Central) or following behind General Palmer and going off to Mexico.

If it's 1905 and I'm a surveyor in Colorado, I've got work.

Good idea regarding the pre-emptive advice to the Milwaukee Road officers! The first thing you tell them is that scoudrel James J Hill is likely going to take over the North Bank of the Columbia with his Spokane, Portland & Seattle line, so you better act fast if you want a water level grade to the west side of the Cascades. Secondly, you tell them to vote down Rockefeller and accept a joint PCE with the Chicago & Northwestern to share the financial burden. Lastly, you advise them that if they want the absolute best line from Chicago to Puget Sound, lower operating costs trump expensive engineering anytime - keep your mountain divisions short and sweet. Gentle grades and minimized curvature

By the way, you're more likely to die from the flu than you are dying in combat, so you're probably better off shipping off to France and getting together with some frisky French girls and going through a few bottles of French wine, than you are going to the jungles of the Amazon. Just stay out of the trenches and keep your feet dry.
