A 4-8-4 is a Wyoming! [(-D] Seriously, I have to " give props" to the best steamer I ever saw run (and How!) N&W A class 1218![^] Nickel Plate Berkshire 765 is good, and much more alive than 1218, too.

It would have to be the GM&N #425, a Pacific type, currently owned by the Reading and Northern. It was the first steam locomotive that I got "up close and personal" with.

OMG PB, the 4-8-4 is probably called a different name on every railroad. A Pocono (DL&W), a Kanawah (C&O), just to name a few eastern ones here. [:D]

Definitely a mighty Texas (2-10-4). Never had the chance to come over and see and hear one in the flesh, but sure would like to have done it.

Everyone likes all the big time steamers...sheesh

My vote would go to the D&RGW K27/K-28/K-36 Mikado's.

However, I am quite fond of the D&RGW 4-6-6-4 Challengers and the Firsco 1500 series Mountains

I've long been fond of the Berk myself. I'm "collecting" pictures of them, usually with me in the shot...

The Kanawha is a Berkshire by a different name.

The 4-8-4's original name was the Northern, IIRC, but as Tom pointed out, the engine had a lot of names:
Northern,
Niagara,
Confederation,
Dixie,
Greenbrier,
Pocono,
Potomac,
Golden State (GS),
Western,
General,
Governor,
Big Apple,
FEF.

Most other arrangements only had one name. A few had as many as three.

Almost any lightweight wheel arrangement on a lightweight, little used branch line. Have seen some light Praries and Pacifics that were pretty. Almost any Katy loco.

I used to think I had a favorite, but as they started to disappear....
each had its own character to be enjoyed and marveled at.

Why those particular N&W 2-8-8-2s out of the hundred they had in the series?

Did you see them in action? (I did . . .)

Pere Marquette N1a 2-8-4 Berkshires #1223 & 1225. The only remaining Pere Marquette Berks! These babies, IMO, are the best looking out of all the Van Sweargian 2-8-4s. UP FEF-3s and Big Boys also get my vote.

The challengers are pretty impressive along with the Mallets.
If you have ever seen those steamers go, it will blow you away.

Any C&O steam, low headlight, oval number plate, high number boards and bell. Just looks like it can pull the mountain of coal.

The 2179 and 2152 were compounds, and the only time you could hear them hitting double licks was when they were being started in simple operation.

Now, the 1200s - THEY're the ones that hit those double licks when they were running at speed. They're also the ones you'd see at Waverly, Ohio on coal trains, way more often than the 2100s.
