Winter Wonderland Railfanning...
Posted by CopCarSS on Monday, May 2, 2005 8:35 AM
Hey all,

Here's a couple shots I took yesterday (May!). It's nice to see that the weather in Colorado is starting to get back to normal. After all, so far, it's the only state that I've been snowed on every month of the year. The shots are at Crescent Siding, on the Moffat Sub:

Amtrak #5, Westbound California Zephyr.

An unpatched SP 329 leading a coal drag down the mountain.

Be sure to expand the pictures!

Happy rails to you all!

Hey all,

LOL, there were others on the #5 that must've shared your thoughts on winter railfanning spbed. As the lounge car rolled past (fairly slowly, since the CZ was waiting for the coal drag to pass), you could see the people staring at me in disbelief. They did start waving, though as they passed. It was kind of funny. I can just imagine the conversations...

"Hey Hon! Look at that. Some lunatic is out there with a camera in the snow!"

Thanks for the nice comments,

Hummmmm white stuff that sounds and looks really nice :) I happen to be a winter person. The only thing I don't like about it is driving in it. However, I will go to the ends of the earth in the snow to catch a train. hehehehehe

Wow,
Kinda make me wonder whats I been missing...sitting here in the swamp, at 9 o:clock at night, its 86 degrees outside, the A/C is blasting away, all the ceiling fans are on...trying to imagine what snow would be like.

Come to think of it, I kinda like living where you can wear tee shirts and shorts, on Christmas day....

Here's a deal. I'll Fedex a box of our cold. When you get it, empty the cold and return the box with warm.

Ed, if you want cold, come on up to the Ky. Derby: even though they say we'll
have a warm Derby this year, I've got a sneaking feeling that Mother Nature
will turn a fast one over on us, and we'll have that four letter "s" word!

I lived in the NE most of my life. 27 inches of snow a few years ago moved me south. Buuuuuuuuuut once I got away to no snow/ice nor cold well it is tough to go back. You sought of become spoiled to nice weather all year round. Again thanks for your dedication & the pixs. My son who lives in Florida says his Denver friends wife wants to come back she is real depressed by the weather[:D][:p]

Not a bad quote. Of course it could be fall, winter, or even summer. When I climbed Mt. Elbert (highest in CO, 14,440 ft. above MSL), I got covered in snow (well, actually, I think it was groppel). That was at the end of July!

But, at the same time, if one doesn't like the weather in Colorado, all one has to do is wait 15 minutes, or drive 15 miles (and this really isn't much of an exaggeration). This is the state where you can go skiing, golfing, and swimming all in the same day! [:p]

Once again, thanks for all the kind words![:I]

Yahoo!!! we here in Siberialberta are having our 3 week summer a little early and Texas is buried in snow. We love to share the Four feet of "flurries" What we do need are photos of railway snow plows at work, I haven't see a wedge or rotary plow photo for a long time , almost like they don't exist or no one is taking photos of them.

Actually Ed, I have worn a tee shirt and shorts on Christmas before here. I think last year it was in the 50's on the 25th. Around here it is much more common to have a white Easter than a white Christmas, whoda thunk[:D].

And Chris, drop me a line I am thinking of going out trackside this weekend (supposed to be in the low 70's I think), just not sure where I am going yet though.

Chris: Thanks for sharing those photos with us. They are great. I have togive you a great deal of credit for going out and phtographing trains in what looks to me like near blizzard conditions. The falling snow adds something to both photos.

What kind of a camera did you use to get these pictures? How low was the temperature? I assume you used a battery operated camera, did you have any trouble with the battery going dead because of the cold?
