What is your favorite racetrack
Posted by chad thomas on Thursday, April 28, 2005 12:53 PM
OK I think we all have posted on our favorite mountain grades.
Now lets hear about your favorite spots to watch trains race by at high track speeds.

Mine are :

The UP(exSP) along the Salton Sea.

The BNSF(ex SF) Needles sub. east of Ash Hill.

And the UP(exWP) on the Smoke Creek desert in western Nevada.

My favorite would be the BNSF Chicago-Aurora main, at virtually any location west of Berwyn, especially during afternoon rush hour. Also for consideration would be Amtrak's NEC line in New Jersey.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

Needles sub is pretty good since I was doing 80 & could not catch a BNSFer until he slowed for a signal.

I was down by Marana AZ (Gila sub) & that was pretty hot also. I was not lucky enough to catch one at the Salton Sea though. [:o)][:D][:p]

Geneva Lakes Greyhound Track! Oh, you meant a train track....

CN (Illinois Central) south of Champaign. From memories when I was at the U of I watching #1 (City of New Orleans) blast southbound behind three E's matched A, B, B. Freshman year I could watch the trains from my dorm room window.

I'm just your average, everyday, uncivilized howling "anti-government" critic of mass government expenditures for "High Speed Rail" in the US. And I'm gosh darn proud of that.

Dont forget about the old ATSF at Kernan IL high speed curve and the fact that they are running 70 mph talk about fun plus plenty of public area's to watch from.

[:D] I second that DITTO and would add the UP Geneva SubDivision that roughly paralells the BNSF line

My alltime favorite is the UP line along the Salton Sea. It is a great place to gets lots of good pictures and the trains are right next to the road.
Best of all the engineers are always happy to see amature photographers!

If were talking speed & action... then it's gotta be Elmhurst, IL on the UP Geneva sub. Saturdays between 1045 & 1430 are very busy & just after the EB morning commuter rush. UP Omaha DS #11 always have there hands full.

No, that would be too cool though. The closest thing I've seen to a race would be a freight being overtaken.

Interesting that this thread should be revived on Derby Day! [}:)]

As far as I'm concerned, there are only two real racetracks--NEC and the one just south of me on that other railroad.

Ok I'm going to have to say my favorite spot to watch trains ru***hrough at high speed would be right on the NEC at North Philadelphia Station. This is only 15 mins from my house and the best part is that I can take the train there!!! I would like to go to a freight line though, and watch a mainfest or something come throught at 60 or 70 mph. I've neve experienced that in person, I have over the phone though. I guess I need to get out more huh?/ lol

1. NE Corridor Boston Switch - Route 128, Princeton Junction and Rahway NJ, Newark DE. 2. BNSF at Naperville, IL. 3. CSX at Baldwin (is that Georgia or Florida, don't have a map handy and forget whether it is north or south of the state line?). 4. The overpass east of Galesburg, IL, where the ex AT&SF and ex-CB&Q lines cross.
