I was looking at the pictures at the Trains Photo Archive and I noticed this picture called Overland Runner (or something like that)and it featured the City of Denver, now the question is, what kind of locomotive was heading that train??

It looks like the M-10003 that was built by EMD. it had a 16 cyl. Winton 201-A engine and was built in 1936.

I went looking for the pic you mention, and as slow as this site is, got up to about 128 of 426 and lost patience looking.

It probably is one of UP's old 10000 series, but I hate to speculate not having seen what you are taLKING ABOUT.

Well, you are right on "both" accounts....the search here works rather well,.....and you pegged the train..=) Odd articulated animals that they were.

Mike, I don't usually nitpick, and it's not a big deal, but I believe that if it was built in 1936, it would have been built by Electro Motive Corporation, not Electro Motive Division. From what I have read, EMC became EMD sometime in the early 1940's.

To give a more specific answer to this question,
CD-05 and CD-06(there was also a CD-03)were U.P.'s
early rostering for the units and they were custom
built for the City of Denver. There would not have
been a specific model number-e.g. SW-1, GP-7, E-3,
etc. as during that time in history, passenger
diesels employed a carbody produced in conjunction
with a passenger car builder with internal parts
and running gear(largely off the shelf items here
in the case of EMC/EMD)provided by a locomotive
builder prior to the introduction of "catalogue"
or specific model types.
