Dru,

Has U.P. replaced all of the old Rock Island triangle three-light block signals? Is there any left? The last time I railfanned the GSR there was only few left b/w Pratt and McPherson and I think I had seen a couple b/w Liberal and Tyrone Okla.

Spbed,

The signal has a round face and the in the center of the face the lenses are set up in an upside down triangle. Very cool. Like I said, there was only a few left the last time I railfanned the GSR. Also, for a side note....stop at Tucumcari and get some shots of the ex-RI/SP depot and if you go to Dalhart get some shots of the ex-RI depot too. It sits just north of the UP/BNSF diamond. Oh, and I almost forgot if you drive along the Dalhart yard you will see the old Rock Island grain elevator with the RI herald painted on each of the grain bins.

Actually that all sounds wonderful to see & thanks for the suggestion. Regrettably I am going as far north from El Paso as Vaughn NM on this trip. From Vaughn I will turn westward towards Santa Fe. If I decide to say follow the GSR from KC down I will dial you up & you can furnish me your suggestions again. I surely would love to see one of the
UPRR monsters on the long tanget track from Dalhart eastward. I am sure it would be like seeing the UPRR bullet train in western AZ that I saw. If i find one of those signals I will take a pix of it for you. If I find any RI legacy I will also take pix for you. You know the March issue of Trains magazine has a pix of a RI train entering the SPRR @ El Paso. You can clearly see the RI on the front of the engine as well as the RI herald. [:o)][8D][:D]

Yeah. That is a pretty sweet pic of the RI train coming into El Paso. If you plan on going around the middle of June you will catch wheat harvest in the southern part of the state so, you might catch quite a few grain trains besides the usual intermodal traffic. Dru would know for sure when wheat harvest would start. Oh, if you decide to follow the whole GSR make sure to stop at Liberal and get pics of the Depot and Grier Eating house. I have several shots of the depot in Liberal also of the Samson of the Cimmaron too.

1st I am scheduled to go in Oct. On this trip the fartherest north I will be going is Vaughn NM. Anything north of Vaughn will have to await another trip. So all these wonderful suggestions you have given me will have to await some future trip to the great plains. [:o)][:o)][:o)]

Does anyone know if the ADM flour mill at Inman is still operating? This was a regular stop for the Hutchinson-McPherson local turn which had the unoffical nickname as the Reno County Rocket. Heard that the mill is no longer in business. Just wondering.

I know U.P. has a local manifest which runs from Herrington to El Paso and does pickups and set outs along the line so, maybe the mill is being served. When the Rock was around they ran a "mini-train" b/w Herrington and Hutch. I would suppose Dru would know more about it.

And that one guy wonders why I put long replies. On the block signals, there are 2 between each siding. They are still there except for the home and siding signals. The Liberal Depot is now the Chamber of Commerce, and it also houses a Mexican Rest. They have even built a little bit of an area where you go outside and watch them go by, you are only 15 to 20 ft. from the tracks. You are a little elevated so you get a good view of them. I live in Kismet, KS. I am 17 miles NE of Liberal. I am only 4 miles east of the Samson of the Cimarron. I also used to live in McPherson, and no the flour mill is not open at Inman no more. They do run a El Paso-Herington Manifest(MEPHN&MHNEP). These trains are usually not that long, but they are very heavy. They may be only 30-40 cars long but they weigh around 5000 tons. Most of the time, it rolls through with 4 units, most of the time its a grab bag of power. I like them because you can see SD40-2's, old Tunnel Motors-just whatever they can find. Seen the MHNEP yesterday, had a SD70M in lead, followed by a SW1500 UPY1165 going back to Liberal for the yard, and UP 8635(SD40-T2), he was only about 25 cars but he was loaded to the gills. Yes, Liberal has 2 SW1500's doing the yard work there. Inman is between Hutchinson and McPherson. Yes, the stackers do the get on BNSF at Hutchinson, I am 3 hours west of Hutch. If you was to reference to the issue on the GSR. You will see Kismet there on the map. We are just a spot in the road.LOL. They are currently running grain trains for now, they are trying to get last years harvest out still. One interesting noteof interest. About 15 miles NE of Guymon, OK, there is a new Collinwood Grain elevator there. The load big grain trains out of there. They usually run about 115 cars long. The power they use is a pair of GP18's. Most of the time, they run with AC4400's-just 3 of them. But on the "monsters" as you call them. Most of the time, they are not very long. They are running right around 5000 tons, and about 6500 ft long-intermodels. The autorack trains, AKSML is the big one. They never run less then 75 cars long, usually rating a pair of 70M's AKSPX is around 60 cars, AKSTU 45-55. AKSCI,35-45. Intermodels are ILBCH,ICHLB,IEPIM,IIMEP, these are the BNSF routers, manifests MEPHN MHNEP,MWCKS, MKSWC,MKSTU,MTUKS (sometimes they run the last 2) then you have the grain trains, occasional empty coal, and the ILBG2, and IG2LB, those are the ones you want to catch, they run around 9000 ft., rate 4 or 5 units, those also run on BNSF(i THINK). Well I'm off too go chasing on this Sat. morning. Have a good weekend and good hunting.

A EB UPRR stacker is passing the Ft. Madison cam now. It had a 3 loco set & the middle one looked like a CSX colors. Did you see it go by your spot yesterday? [8D][8D]

Dru, Is there a local that runs west of Pratt? How yard shifts work at Hutch, Herington & Dalhart? Many yrs ago, I use to watch some of the GSR back in the Cotton Belt days but we are talking like 15-20 yrs ago. Really enjoyed the SSW.

May I suggest whenever possible that you give me a head ups whenevr a UPRR EB train has left your area destined for the BNSF transcon via Hutchinson so we can time line it? Then I will tell you when it passes Ft. Madison[:o)][:D]

Yes, there is a local that runs west to Liberal from Pratt. Its usually is one day west, the next day back. The current power they are running on it a B40-8, and a leased (LLPX) GP40. I just saw this Wed. night. I am not for sure what the Dalhart local is running anymore, because I am not in Liberal at that time. I don't know how the yard shifts work. But, in Liberal, they usually start about 7, and most of the time they are done by 12 or 1. But you also must consider that the yard there is only 7 tracks and sometimes there really isn't that much to. When I was in town yesterday, they had 3 units as the yard power. 2SW1500's and UP 615, think its a GP38-3(correct me if I'm wrong). It is going to be hard for me to give you a time on these trains, because I can only use the computer a certain time of day. Its a library thing, you know. No, I didn't see the EB stacker yesterday. Plus that is really odd about the EB M/T baretable, I've only seen them running west, not for sure where that one came from. Its been slow today through here, I've only heard 2 today. I was heading east, and the way he sounded coming up the hill, he must of had a lot of power, because it was louder then normal. It definantly had more than a typical train through here. So I will try to let you know if I can convince the person working here to let me back on to inform you when one might come through. I have until 5 today, and I will be back on at 1 tomorrow. So have fun and enjoy.
And, this line usually has most of the brand new power come through here, just 2 weeks ago, saw a C45ACCTE, it is one of the new GEVO's. They sound a lot differant, then a regular GE. Unit#5360. See most of the new70M's that come out of Mexico. They usually run in order, 2 or 3 at a time.

Concerning the baretables the only way the UPRR can access the BNSF transcon is thru the GSR @ Hutchinson. The only other thing I could think of it was a BNSF train using a UPRR power to pull the MTs. Yes I also only saw 1 EB UPRR stacker today so far. I have not seen a WB UPRR train on the BNSF transcon in several days now. Rather strange I though also. [:p][:)]

WB UPRR stacker alert. Just passed the FM cam @ 0830 FM time today. Middle loco appeared to start with a 3 & 3rd loco appeared to start with a 2. Had a 3 set UPRR locos set. 1st well had a white one on the bottom & a blue stack train container on top of it. The end of the train was just COFC cars not double stack cars. [:D][:p][:)][8D]

Heads up! Had a EB go through today at 10:55 A.M.CST. I had Evergreen and Uniglory containers. Not for sure if this one goes on BNSF, this train is the old SP LBFHX, heading to Forest HIll facility in Chicago. Now, I believe it is the ILBFH. Also, an EB stack through here at 11:30 A.M. CST. This one is coming your way. It here the PACER containers, this one is the ICICH. City of Industry to Chicago. I didn't see the units on any of these. One other thing, UP can access the GSR at Vaughn NM, and Kansas City at Santa Fe Junction. Last night, saw the APXKS, 58 cars long, the lead unit was a KCS and the 2nd was a unit of CONRAIL past. Didn't get to see who owned it since it was at night, and I was across the highway. On the baretable, it could have been a transfer back to Chicago. Kansas City is known to hold MT's until there is enough of them to get one out of Chicago. That could be another possibility. The ones that run through here, I beleive are symboled,BCHLB. I don't see them very often, maybe twice a month. So there is your heads up on the stackers coming your way.

Thanks for the heads up. So far there has not been any EB action today. Those 2 trains you mention I am fearful will pass during the nite hours. yes I have mapped out Vaughn for my trip in Oct & see that you you can move from the UPRR to the BNSF their. I wonder though if the UPRR holds trackage rights from Vaughn to Hutchinson on the BNSF. We know they hold them from Hutchinson to Chicago. [;)]

As for the baretables what the use we will probably never know why? I understand what you are saying that maybe it was a MT move form KC to Chicago. [;)]

Thanks again I will advise you if I see those 2 trains tomorrow.[;)]

You know I have not seen any auto rackers in some days. I wonder if they discontinued use of the BNSF Transcon then the GSR then the Sunset route & insead all now moving them via the overland route for those cars?

are these UP trains the same ones i see all the time on BNSF's ex-CB&Q line heading towards chicago? or do those UP trains use the ex-santa fe all the way to chicago? i knew the SP had trackage rights from kansas city to chicago over the BN, i wasn't sure if that arrangement carried over to the UP and BNSF...

If you peek into the Ft. Madison web cam you would see the track nearest the road is ex-CBQ. The other 2 tracks were the ATSF mainline transcon from the W/coast to Chicago. The only UPRR trains I have ever seen on the transcon are either A/rackers or D/stackers or intermodal trains which enter or depart the BNSF @ Hutchinson KS. From the Trains magazine it appears all other UPRR trains use the entire GSR to KC then go straight north where they finally connect with the UPRR overland route (ex CNW). [:o)][:D][:)]

You know it is only 433 rail miles from Hutchinson to Ft Madison & those 2 trains yesterday took about 24 hours to transit from your area to FM. About how many mile are you more/less from Hutch? [:D][:D]
