Beyond the grain elevator now under construction, there seems to be a fair amount of wishful thinking involved.

Colorado Pacific submitted the winning bid for the bankrupt San Luis & Rio Grande RR.

If there is consistent agricultural business they should be able to make a go of it.

It is not that different from other grainger short lines on the plains.

Considering that they own a very large portion of the cropland under production (white wheat) and have spent a healthy chunk of $$$ undoing the damage caused by previous owner V&S/A&K Materials, they will do just fine. (The owner/son is very hands-on and very visible in the community)

It would help if the recovery from the extreme drought from two years ago stays away and lets dryland farming resume.

Wikipedia states that V&S/A&K were "forced" to sell (2014) .  Is there a story there?

I believe that the STB reasonably concluded that V&S/A&K had no interest in continued operation of the line (was more interested in selling the scrap) and did not appreciate that they were gaming the process.

This is a favorite tactic of A&K, using a subsidiary (V&S, SF&L, KCT etc) to gut a rail line and speed the way to abandonment and scrapping.They then disappear and emerge somewhere else. They ditch their responsibilities as landowners/custodians after abandonment and leave others to pick up the pieces. Bad corporate citizen for over 30 years.

Some of you may have heard of a more prominent case of what happened here with the sale and proposed abandonment of the west end of the TP&W.

   Have read ths tale of "The Colorado Pacific"  and having over time, developed a very healthy respect, for our fellow poster, 'Mudchicken';      I knew there was an interesting 'back story' to this tale.  So from the 'source of the OP's original posting of the link on the Colorado Pacific's new power, I did a little surfing on the 'net'...
