blue streak 1BTW my house built circa 1895
According to one record I've seen, mine was built in 1840, which would square with when the hamlet was being built. The addition was put on in the late 1940's.
The original portion of the house has rough cut timbers (actually 2"x4") held together with square nails.
It'd take a bit to get that old wood started (sheer mass), but once it was going, watch out!
Many's the old building that has suffered such a fate as the one in question.

Cool/cold and wet the past couple of days, after a beautiful weekend (see Harrison's thread). What's left of the colors is rapidly finding its way to the ground.
Just over a half inch of rain in the past couple of days.
A friend in Wisconsin shared pictures of their snow...

No significant fall colors in my area, instead acorns have been incessantly falling 24/7 on my roof for over a week - the groundskeepers are getting behind. Interesting, squirrels do not like them as they come from our large valley oak (not native coast live type).
Temps are ramping up for a short two day ~80sF heat spell.

Deshler Ohio-crossroads of the B&O Matt eats your fries.YUM! Clinton st viaduct undefeated against too tall trucks!!!(voted to be called the "Clinton St. can opener").
Ns had cars up town.Saw an eastbound Carl special when we left work.Went into town to run errands.Someone was going a bit fast and Mr Officer had to have a talk with them.Going to make supper.
Ns had cars uptown after work.Mother nature couldn't make up her mind.So we went into town.Came home and it was much better.Crunched some leaves and now waiting to put a coat of paint on the bench boards for Deshler.Glad tomorrow is Friday.Going to be a good weekend to get stuff done or look at the trees.Planning on checking on my brother on Sunday.
Today defined "miserable" as it applies to weather. Cold, windy, rainy. A day you simply didn't want to be outside.
Spent some time at our local PBS station today, running the timer for a "Jeopardy" style competition between area high schools. They simply had to answer questions, rather than forming questions for given answers.
Did three "episodes." They'll air later this year. No, I can't tell you who won...
A while back I found that the automatic headlight feature wasn't working in the truck. The manual switch worked, so no big deal, right? Except that the HVAC control module in the dash is what controls that feature - thus no HVAC control, either. Replacing the module would have involved removing the entire dash - no fun.
Discovered that the problem was corrosion on the tabs on the fuse, which box is located under the hood, versus under/in the dash. Thought I had if fixed when I pulled the fuse and cleaned the tabs, but today it wasn't working again, so the tabs got a gentle coat of copper electrical lubricant. Hopefully that fixes it for long while. This time of year heat is nice to have...

The YouTube South Main Auto channel, which is housed in upstate NY, is a small town, independent automotive technician who undertakes diagnosis and repair of all forms of automotive problems - problems that in way too many cases are a result of poor electrical connections - especially vehicles that have the 'green crusties' of corrosion for vehicles that have been driven in the relative salt mines of Northeastern states in the Winter.

mudchicken Retired Friday - Monday doesn't seem to be any different. Still dealing with a big pile of stuff accumulated after the weekend. DC/Tree/Balt - What'd I just manage to miss?

I've figured out that I'm one of those people that will have a hard time retiring. I don't like not being busy.
Have fun in your retirement.
Thanks to Chris / CopCarSS for my avatar.
Have to see if you are in the same 'hood in the next month or so. Passing close by to your south on two trips.

I rarely have trouble finding something to do...
In fact, there's stuff I should be working on that I haven't...
Ns had cars uptown and a westbound after work.Had to go back for another board for the park bench. The 6 ft ones they had left were in sad shape. So we got an 8ft one and cut in down to size.Waiting for college boy to come home.Using mother natures wind to dry the paint quickly. The new board will get a second coat soon.

Boy are you lucky. Had those square nails also. Quite an efford to remove them. Had that same rough cut lumber but======= No kidding size was everything from true 1-1/2 x 3-1/4 to 4-1/2 x 2-3/8. You can imagine the wavy walls. Just sistered in current 2x6 to even out walls . Extra benefit of more insulation possible in walls with no insulation.
Went to Deshler and worked on projects.Plenty got done.Csx sent their new Operation Lifesaver unit on a double tanker train west. The train was split at Garrett.Tomorrow going to check on my brother.
blue streak 1Just sistered in current 2x6 to even out walls.
After we bought the house I gutted out the upstairs rooms to insulate them (they were supposedly insulated, but somebody lied...) I decided to put fire stops in where possible. Had to rip 2x6's to fill the space as a "common" 2x4 wouldn't do the job.
afternoon
Checked on brother today. He was able to see the progress of the Spangler Candy company in Bryan. They are painting their water tower to look like their "Dum Dum" suckers.Ns did run a few trains as well.Have a friend coming on I 171 soon.Going to enjoy the rest of the day and go wave.
Ns had cars uptown. They also sent a westbound stack train after work. Our back maple tree decided to drop it's leaves today. The front one still has over 50 percent of its leaves. Was out mulching them up.Time to get cleaned up.
Gorgeous day! Temps in the 70's for the past few days, and tomorrow, then back to seasonal weather. None of the white stuff forecast in volume, yet...
I hate long meetings - but had to sit through one tonight. Doesn't help when people want to make a point that doesn't need to be made, and take forever to do it...
Did manage to finish up putting everything away from the Pumpkin Trains on Saturday.
Got to go thought the 'Net and see what I missed. Then bed.
Ns had cars uptown after work.Ran errands and saw a rear end DPU on CSX but couldn't see what the train was.Stopped at the store.Decisions Decisions on what we were going to give for trick or treat.Came home and chopped up more leaves.Mother nature going to send us some rain.Time for supper.
Ns had new cars uptown today after work.Got the oil changed in Mammas car.Saw I 191 and an eastbound on Csx.More leaves to mulch up after work tomorrow.Time for supper.
Most leaves are still on the trees! Some have changed colors, some are still green. Waiting to fire up the mower until there are move leaves on the ground.
Had a group doing a presentation at our FD banquet hall tonight for yet another solar panel project.
Not sure how many acres this one is going to cover, but it looks like several complete farms will be harvesting sunlight instead of any sort of crop. One farm used to be a major dairy farm around here. They haven't farmed it in years.
And our soil isn't real conducive to many popular crops. Most of what gets grown here is hay, often baled in big round or square bales and shipped out of the area.
At least we'll have plenty of power as long as the sun shines.
Ns had shuffled more cars uptown when I left work.Came home and mulched up some leaves. Our trees are done.Neighbor has a few more trees to go.Glad tomorrow is Friday.
Leaves still mostly on the trees here. Won't be for long - our light dusting of snow as an introduction to winter turned into four inches.
Our leaves here are mostly gone. A few trees are still hanging on, but not many.
Our tropical fall has pretty much ended. We saw highs in the 70's quite often for the past week or more. They'll be more seasonal from here out.
There's been a little snow around the area, mostly at higher elevations. Nothing here at the house, though.
Ns was the same after work today.Ran errands in town.Csx sent a westbound.MC did see where areas around you were getting snow.Tomorrow night is a halloween parade and trick or treat in Deshler.Going to go look at the Trains magazine that came in the mail today.
Got my issue of a fire apparatus magazine the other day. Found a reference to a local vendor who does apparatus rehabs. When I get done poring through it, I'll give the issue to them.
The story in question is about how NYC sold many of its fire trucks to such vendors (or directly to fire departments). They may have been tired, but they gave the departments that got them something many didn't have before, particularly aerials.

Our town had 2 ex-FDNY macks in the 90s. A 1980 CF engine, and a 81 truck. Both long sold off - the engine is in a private collection and survives somehow*. The truck - I have no clue.
*- another department in town had a beautiful 71 CF since new that was maintained and in decent shape (small town), and through a series of stupid decisions it was donated to a southern department that pretty much tossed it in a field to rust and eventually sold it for scrap.
It's been fun. But it isn't much fun anymore. Signing off for now.
The opinions expressed here represent my own and not those of my employer, any other railroad, company, or person.t fun any
I've spotted some old but still serviceable equipment in small-town firehouses. The most interesting one was in 1976 when I spotted a DUKW in the Grand Marais MN firehouse, presumably for rescues on the lake.
The market for used apparatus is huge right now. With new custom pumpers going for well over a half million bucks, someone's not-too-abused hand-me-down can help a small department greatly. A new aerial can easily run over a cool million.
We were able to replace our 1993 pumper in 2014 with a new custom rig. AFAIK, the '93 is still in service in Tennessee. Likewise, a neighboring department's medium rescue is still running calls in Texas.
That, and many departments are rehabbing trucks, bringing them up to date for a fraction of a full-on replacement. Of course, the railroads are doing the same thing.
