I just received the June issue and Jim's From the Editor article says he's he leaving the Editor's position? Was that the case just prior to his untimely passing? Just curious. Thanks
I would assume that Jim Wrinn wrote this letter well in advance when he was informed that the cancer was terminal. He was able to say goodbye to us in his own words when the time came.
The tragedy for me is:
I did not know about Jim's illness until his death was announced by the Magazine.
I pray daily for the health of those I care for and who are ill.
No cancer is terminal in israel anymore. There are experimental treatments that are just beginning USA evaluations that have proiven effective in Israel. I had a form of cancer wherein the doctors told me immediate surgery was required or I would go blind. This weould have meant a five-nights hospital stay at a time when I needed to be active. A doctor i n the health service I use (Miyuheded) said he had a colleague at Bellinson Hospital in Petah Tikvah that was trying an exoperimental approach and gave me the necessary paperwork to go to Bellinson (a different and competing health service, Clallil), and try (no guarantee) to arrange an appointment, and operhaps he would take me on as patient. As luck would have it, when i went to the specific Admitions office, Doctor Tobar, who pioneered the experimental treatment in Israel, was in that office, took the paperwork from me, read it, invited me to follow him to his office-treatment room, and for the next six months had a weekly commute, mostly by buses, but sometimes involving a train ride, going from Modi'in and/or returning to Jersalem by the old slow scenic route, to Bellinson, and have a complete cure, no relapse, and see about as well as when I had that first cancer examination. Special pills were involved, and i continue with diet-supplement pills now. I don't have 20/20 vision, but probably do see better than most 90-year-olds.
Maybe I could have helped Jim. I wouuld have tried.

Treatment advances over the last 25 years for the various forms of cancers have made recovery and/or remission likely in many cases. These are cures. I think you are referring to cancer prevention. Any of the big or little pharmas that find a preventative vaccine for a type of cancer will make a ton of moolah.

I was diagnosed with Colon Cancer in 1996. My 3rd World medical team in Jacksonville pulled me through. My surgeon from the Balkans excised about 16 inches of colon with the assistance of a Egyptian urologist. The surgery was followed up with six months of chemotherapy administed by my Oncologist from the Sudan. During the period of chemo I underwent radiation therapy for six weeks under the direction of a Russian radiologist.
If 'big pharma' gets run by clinicians they develop cures. When 'big pharma' is run by businessmen they hide 'cures' in favor of continuing treatments - got to keep money coming to the bottom line.
