Big time Snow Storm heading for the Northeast.

Anyone heading to or going to do any Railfanning or anything else in the northeast. Keep up on the latest Forcast.
More than a foot of snow is expected from the nothern dakotas all the way to the northeast. They have already been battered just under a week and another is on the way. Then to make matters much worse Wind over 50 to 60+ are expected over the next day or too,so Railfans be very carefull out there.

Yeah, just looked at a forecast for Boston, it said they are expecting 1 to 2 feet of snow. Winter Storm / Blizzard warnings all the way to Washington, DC. I Hope all of the railroad employees stay safe and the train watchers stay home until it's over.

Stay Home?

This would make for some great snow shots, something I certainly don't get much of a chance to do out here.

It's begun here in the Chicago area. I'm home from work today, resting up for the morning of shoveling (6-10" here, too) tomorrow. The area around the southern end of Lake Michigan could get over a foot of it. I'm hoping that by the time I go to work tomorrow, we'll at least know what we're up against.

Stay home if you can until its over....Here in the NYC metro area,, they are talking 10-20 inches or more, No need to try to go out in that stuff.....I like snow shots myself, but won't bother trying it in 1 to 2 feet of falling snow.....Dave Williams http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nsaltoonajohnstown

...I don't know if the weather system has changed overnight but we here in the Muncie area were under the threat of from 5 to 10" by about noon today and we got maybe an inch over night and it's not snowing now and very little wind. Wind of 25 or so was forecast....Did this Alberta Clipper change over night...? Must check the radar to see where it is.....

...Just got a peak at the radar and now they're saying another 1 to 3" yet today so maybe it is not traveling as fast as predicted and maybe It's tracking a bit north of us......

Nothing here in Louisville right now,we were supposed to have gotten
rain/freezing rain/sleet overnight and some snow today;but so far nothing
has happened. They are calling for a 'windy' day (25-35mph)and some
snow later on today.
It won't hurt my feelings if it stays away.[:D]

NWS has issued a blizzard warning for all of eastern Massachusetts starting at 9PM tonight to 9AM Sunday. They are saying 22-24 inches light powdery snow with blowing and drifting to 3-4 feet.

Remind me again, why do I love living in New England?

Stay warm dry and safe and enjoy the Blizzard of 2005

they'd forecast 6-10" for us, but we look to be about halfway through it with only about three inches.

Still don't have much in the way of snow; basically furrying, nothing is
sticking to the ground. Walked to the store earlier, and it was sleeting/
snowing then. On the way back, was just snow. Nothing seems to be
sticking to the ground/pavement yet, though. But temp is dropping.
Had been holding steady, around 35 degrees. Has dropped to upper
twenties now.

Blew about eight inches off drive and sidewalk at 9:00 a.m. today and it has been snowing on and off ever since with another three to four on the ground since this morning, well, I guess I will be out there again tonight or Sunday morning. Oh, the heck with it, I will wait until Sunday. The plow has been down our street twice today. Yep, winter fun here in the Midwest!

Been snowing here all afternoon, but it's so windy that there are still bare spots on the driveway. We're supposed to see up to 6 inches, but it's taking its time.

On the other hand, it's currently -5, the high for the day, and the wind is gusting up over 20 mph (and I live in a small valley), pushing the wind chill well towards 30 below. The house is nice and warm, and I made sure the birds had plenty of sunflower seeds.

Yes, winter is grand.

I was talking Thursday night to the sheriff of a neighboring county which is popular for snowmobiling. He said the sledders were flocking in....

Drove from Delavan (10") to my office near Rockford (maybe 12") this morning. Road plowed, but definately "winter driving conditions". Short stretch of I-90 in Illinois that I use was clear and wet. The Illinois Tollway Authority might be the cause of that sink hole in Hutchinson, KS. Northbound 18-wheeler got just past the state line, couldn't handle Wisconsin's winter road and hit the ditch. Looked like the only damage might have been to the drivers confidence.

Got back in daylight just after the temps dropped and the wind picked up. I wouldn't go out tonight even to watch UP steam come through town. (Not an event I expect any time soon-like the next milenia).

The 9PM update from the NWS here in Boston is now stating that it may well be over 30 inchs and heavy gusts. They are saying it will be one of the 5 major storms of history. It may even rival the famed Blizzard of '78, which brought the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and all of New England to a stop for nearly 5 days.

Here in Attleboro we have a bout 5 inchs on the ground and the DPW chatter is that they are just trying to keep ahead of the coming brunt of the storm.

Rail chatter is nil on CSX and P&W. Amtrak & Commuter rail chatter is sparse.

My wife is on the couch in the family room with a roaring fire in the fire place. I think I will join her and just watch it snow!

Please be careful, and if I am really really lucky who knows I may get to see a plow on the North East Corridor!

I was just up in Attleboro a few weeks ago, to pick up a plow pump for my Willys Jeep....here, just north of NYC, we have about a foot on the gtround. We had an hour long lull around 10-11PM..seemed like it was done, then bam! Just looked out the window again and its a white out. Talking about 18 inches when its done in my neck of the woods....Thankfully, the ground was bare before this storm, so I have room to put it with the plow....back in 1996, we had a Blizzard of this size on top of a foot or more accumulsated on the ground from previous storms...Had to use my backhoe to pu***he snow piles back....too much for the Jeep by that point....Dave Williams http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nsaltoonajohnstown

Skies have cleared here, and I'd say we got close to a foot of snow overall. I didn't have to deal with too much snowfall at work, but the wind was from the right direction to freeze the switches repeatedly, in spite of (or perhaps because of) the electric switch heaters. We didn't get too many cars humped, but they all stayed on the rail!

The wind's supposed to die down later tonight, so the night boys might get to whittle down the backlog.

The lake effect is giving downtown Chicago and Indiana a little more snow than we've gotten out west of the city. As I mentioned, our skies are clear, but you couldn't see the skyline twelve miles away, and there was a distinct bank of clouds to our east. We have one co-worker who drives home to Indiana after work--hope she's up to it!

Its now 1105 AM and its is still snowing at the rate of 4 inchs an hour! I just shoveled a path from the back door and made a patch for our greyhound to go out. And of course she just looked at it and went back on the couch.

The Gov. Mitt Romney has just gone on TV and said that it is useless to clear the snow until this afternoon. It is still blowing pretty good as I look out the window. A state of emergency has been declared. The National Guard is on standby in case of costal flooding at high tide.

Amtrak is rather quiet, haven't heard any chatter for the last 90 mins or so.

I am so not looking foreward to snow removal operations! The NWS in Boston is saying that the snowfall amounts are more than the Blizzard of 78.

I wonder what procedures the NEC puts into effect on snows like this. The old AMTRAK locomotives used to have a "snowplow" but I don't think the GENESIS shoebox does. Come to think of it, the ACELA trainset doesn't have a plow, either.

Because it's New England, and New England gets cold (as does most of the northern tier of states) I wonder if there is a system of switch heaters to keep points clear- or if the switch heater is some poor MOW guy with a torch?
