Do you know how long its been since I've been able to check out one of "my" specials? We were lucky enough, after one of my medical appointments, to catch a BNSF intermodal that contained a couple of nearly-new stack cars. As a result, I have to send a report to my carchaeologist friends by the end of the month. Right now, I have about five different irons in the fire, medically speaking. No breaks or sprains, but I should be feeling a lot worse than I do. It's sunny out there; I hope we can get another layer of leaves off our lawn.

Went over to Marion last night for the slide show.Csx had a local go out and back on the Indy line. On the C&O side we had two coal trains and a freight go west.On the NS side they had stack trains,frieght and coal.The coal trains were really long and had mid train dpus and pushers.Going to go check on my brother today.Matt goes back to school for Monday then he is home for Thanksgiving break.Time for some chores.

Still hanging around the house. Not going out until the recheck with the surgeon on the 3rd. It sure changes things when a simple trip to another room gets to be an involved process with a lot of hopping on one foot. I'm finding some new muscles...
But, I've got plenty to do, so at least I'm staying sort of busy. Good chance to do some decluttering. Already finding FD stuff that's headed out the door... Old files, etc.

It won't even be close. I won't even get the permanent "fix" for two weeks, then throw in 4-6 weeks of healing and PE will have ended.
Climbing on and off the locos would be a challenge (especially the F), and working on a rocking train as on-board crew would be out of the question.
I'll miss working the trains, but I do feel for the folks that have to fill the gap I've created.

By contrast to tree's misfortune, I get to plan for cataract surgery in a couple of weeks. My 11 diopter myopia will be traded for something near normal.
I'm bringing the turkey for Thanksgiving supper, so I've prepared some gravy ahead of time from other poultry parts. No rush to strip the carcass and mess with pan drippings, that will be part 2 later.

I did, however, acquire a couple of apples and oranges to go with the cranberries I already had to make my favorite cranberry relish. I could actually do an entire dinner, but why cook if someone else is willing?

Today was a good day. Got a call from the ortho folks, informing me that they are moving my surgery up several days. As a result, they wanted me to pay a visit to my primary care doc, so a friend got me there (and back), my first foray outside since the accident.
The contraption on my foot right now is just holding everything in place. With any luck, after Tuesday the permanent fix will be in and I can begin healing.

Now a days - before any procedure that requires anesthesia, they seem to require you to get a physical exam to see if you are 'strong enough' for the procedure you will be undergoing.
Had to get a physical w/EKG for my Bladder surgery and get another physical for my kidney surgery two weeks later.

Yep - Doc said she cleared a woman for some procedure some years ago, the patient keeled over after the procedure - full arrest. The woman survived, and may still be around. The clearance by the Doc saved the hospital a lot of heartache...
In other news, moved the "hosts" file from my desktop PC to my laptop (finally). It's amazing how nice the forum is sans most of the ads...
Every now and then I get a notice to shut off my spam blocker, but there's nothing to turn off - it's essentially part of the OS now...

Good luck with your cataract surgery, had my first 2019 and my second about 7 months ago. Made a huge improvement. My wife had her cataract surgeries in the last couple of months, for the first time in decades, she can see without needing glasses - though we both need reading glasses.
Recovery was a five week regimen of eye drops to promote healing and prevent infections. Also took a few weeks for each eye to settle down.

Good luck with your surgery as well - I had a run-in with a palm frond last month resulting in a half inch piece of the spine embedded in my finger. Had surgery a week ago to remove it. Recovery involved a splint on the finger for five days, stitches coming out in a week and a half and possibly some PT to help restore full movement in my finger.
Goodluck both of you. Had Catarack surgery both eyes month apart. Grat vision now especially wide vision. not having to wear glasses any more except close carpentary work a blessing. Night vision much better.
Had to go throgh all that pre clearances for knee replacement. Possible heart problem almost delayed me but just beat C-19 late 2019. Heart problem false alarm.

When I broke my radius back in 2014, I found out I didn't heal as quickly as when I was younger - instead of a 'normal' two month healing time; the doctor wasn't satisfied that it was healed until five months on. The fix was surgery and installing a plate and 6 screws.
I haven't flown since the plate was installed - don't know if I will set off a metal detector.

I don't know how much metal went into the fix (operated on last night), but the doc was concerned with my diabetes (controlled with diet, and before this, exercise), so he was a little extra cautious.
I'm looking at 8 weeks of recovery. The first four are definitely no weigh, so a lot of hopping with a walker. After that (and another visit with the doc) we'll see how things are going.
They gave me a general anesthesia, which meant an endotraheal tube (breathing tube). My throat can still feel it. I've put them in, but never had one myself....
OTOH, group of local hams is coming over Saturday to survey what it will take to get my tower up and running. I certainly won't be much help. Lots of little things to do to reach the point of actually getting it up and the antennas on the air.

There's a fair chance that the plate will not set of the metal detector, but if it does, the usual practice is to use the metal detection wands to localize what set off the metal detector. You would not be the first person walking through an airport metal detector with metal plates attached to bones.
OTOH, I can certainly understand why you don't want the hassle.

My wife of 62 years has a metal wired wrist repair, two metal hip replacements and one metal knee replacement. I call her my BIONIC WIFE. When we have flown, we tell the TSA about them and if she sets off the detectors, they wand her an she's good to go.
Where ever I set off the detector immediately say have knee rplacements both knees. Makes getting thru very fast . If I see a full full body scanner tell them before and get run thru them which is even sometimes faster which shows the knee replacements,

Thoughs on the various RRs loosing personnel. Because of the way the railway labor act the unions cannot strike right now over the awful working conditions. Could it be that many railroaders are taking the best option and striking by leaving the various RRs ? That beggs the question of how the various roads are going to meet this problem?
Now we then have other various business that are having retention of employees. could it be most businesses do not have unions to improve working conditions? So the employees that can are just quiting. We might just call this the great USA strike? If the pols recognize this as a strike maybe something will get done?
