The Darwiners are not singling anyone out personally

Usually it's left to the party offended to determine whether they have the right to be offended or not.....look all over the news, and that's what you'll see. Misunderstood intentions are seldom a workable excuse.

Euclid, I do have issues with the Darwin thing, and I have stated that.

But the people here who have used that schtick are doing it about a class of people, it's a knock on a type of person. It's not a knock on anyone they know or have anything to do with.

On the other hand, we have one guy here who is directly calling another guy a liar. (I believe you zardoz, btw.) And we have a few guys who are attacking other members here personally about their values.

There's a huge difference. The Darwiners are not singling anyone out personally. Their words will almost certainly not affect the families of those poor victims, because the families will never see them. Nobody is "dancing on someone's grave." That is gross hyperbole.

Whereas you guys are going out of your way to make trouble on this forum. The Darwiners did not mean to make trouble. They just used a saying which, although tacky, is heard everywhere. You guys were offended (as is your right) by their words, but then rather than simply ignore them, you made conscious decisions to make trouble here by attacking people personally.

There's a difference, man.

There are people here who are gunning for each other, it's clear. Every forum I've ever been on has these ongoing spats. (This is NOT my worst forum in this regard: I could direct you to a group of auto racing fans, some of which are vicious.)

Now we have a gentleman calling for zardoz to describe the bloody scene in detail?! Holy ©rap, man. Where does that fit into the Decency Parade?

Maybe all of us should not be so quick to take offense. People are different. Something that offends one guy might not offend someone else. We all have to co-exist here.

So please go extract your point from that thread and show us.

Hasn't Ivy City already been beat to death?

Expecting all parties to find common ground on emotionally divisive issues is a wild goose chase...at best

Which, btw, did I show you this?

The pair of responsive geese I mentioned in another thread are responding to my whistle from just over a quarter mile away, I had to cut the first several seconds out of the file because the hosting service limits videos to one minute in length. My whistle would have just blown your ear drums out anyway, so it's better cut out.

Make sure you have your sound turned on, cut and paste the URL into your address bar

You can try to rationalize it away if you like but the fact remains the Darwin stuff is ghoulish. And an Amtrak engineer with ~50 years of experience agrees.

And yet you all have been jumping on the bodies dead RAIL EMPLOYEE's.  One of which I knew as an acquaintence that I had several converstations with over the years - beyond the official communications of our jobs.

Give me a sanctimonious break!

Sure, but that could be turned on its head too: you and others were clearly very upset at the mere hint that the railroad employees might have been partially responsible for their own deaths, but you have no problem flippantly dismissing the kid on the bridge as a moron who needed to be removed from the gene pool. It just proves that it's all a matter of perspective: if you're connected with someone in a familial, personal, or professional sense, you're more likely to feel empathy. That's human nature.

It proves no such thing because it did not happen the way you or Balt say it did.  You said this:  "...you and others were clearly very upset at the mere hint that the railroad employees might have been partially responsible for their own deaths..."

The discussion is readily available.  You say you know what it said.  You must be able to find what you cite here in that thread.  Please find it and quote it here.

In that thread, there is nothing remotely equivalent to the Darwin Award insult that was made against the two victims of the Ivy City accident.  If you are talking about me making such an insult, I mostly defended the two victims and mostly blamed the CSX.  I would never invoke the Darwin Award, and never did in that thread because I see it as childish chest beating in attacking someone for making a mistake.  So please go extract your point from that thread and show us.

I am not the one complaining about people levying moral verdicts.

Not blaming you, I think you and I see very similarly on the op topic.

I'm just enjoying the NIMBYing here by people who usually go out of their way to fault people who object to the way others do things.

The " MY Back Yard" being this forum, and the insistence by some on how others are expected to behave being the "Not In".

Yeah, stick to railroad subjects like the Darwin Award because it does not levy moral verdicts on others except for the moral verdict that they were killed by their own stupidity, and the gene pool is better off without them.

Gadzooks! I think you have just discovered what I have known all along. This forum is rife with NIMBYS! You just have to wait for threads like this for them to let their guard down.

I am not sure why you cite NIMBYS.  Make sure you have your context correct.  I am not the one complaining about people levying moral verdicts.  That complaint was by Lithonia Operator.  As I understand him, he is referring to those who think it is in bad taste to hand out the Darwin Award.  So he sees the objection to the Darwin Award enthusiasts as a moral judgment that is wrong, but he must then utterly fail to see the incredible moral judgement that is the Darwin Award itself.  Apparently that moral judgement is just fine, just good fun; and to say people are acting badly by doing so is a uncalled for moral judgement.

Here is the original context:

zardoz
First, I did not WANT to go under; I did it so my fellow crew members did not have to get theit uniforms all muddy.

Really?

zardoz
AND they did not allow me to go under, it was requested by emergency personnel.

The city of Chicago emergency personnel "requested" that you go under your train to remove body parts??? This is becoming more bizarre by the sentence.

zardoz
Second, do you really want a graphic description of what I found?

It can't get much more bizarre so yes tell me.

zardoz
Third, he walked on the ROW from the bushes, stopped between the rails, then sat down, looking at the train, waiting to get hit.

The poor disturbed soul got what he wanted and there was nothing you could have done about it.

zardoz
I do not understand why you are having such a problem with my little anecdote.

It is neither interesting or amusing it is preposterous.

zardoz
It is just one incident of hundreds that train crews have had over many decades of railroading.

I have had 'incidents' over the years and not once have I or anyone I have ever heard of been asked to assume the duties of emergency personnel. Until now.

Precisely.  While it was tragic that those two CSX crewmen were killed while walking on an active Amtrak track and it was their fault per NTSB,  no one on here mentioned the offensive term.  Try to keep your facts straight,  Balt.

So you are telling me that you killed a trespasser in the city of Chicago, which has emergency equipment and personnel one would expect for a city of that size, and they allowed you to go under your train and retrieve body parts for the coroner/ME because you wanted to get moving???? What body parts did you retrieve for the ME? Arms, legs, skull, torso? zardoz One second he was just walking in front of us, the next second, thump, and he was history. I thought he was sitting between the rails?

First, I did not WANT to go under; I did it so my fellow crew members did not have to get theit uniforms all muddy. AND they did not allow me to go under, it was requested by emergency personnel.

I do not presume to understand the finer points of law regarding the events that happened that day; I just know what we had to do, and we did it.

OTOH, I find it a bit rich when a guy refuses to believe a man's story, and at the same time wants everyone to be sensitive to the family of the main character of the tale.

I find zardoz 'story' hard to believe and why not show some decency to the family of the deceased?

Imagine this scene:

"Honey, what do you want to do tonight?"

"I thought we might surf the web."

"Why?"

"Well, I think we might be able to find an internet forum where those old guys, whattaya call them, trainspotters, railfanatics ... Anyway, maybe there's a thread where we can kind find people using insensitive language about poor Johnny, God rest his soul."

"But Johnny didn't know any train people. So they don't know anything about him."

"Well, true. But they might be discussing people LIKE Johnny."

"Okay, great! So when they write those things, we can be offended by THAT."

"Right."

"Super. Let's do it."

No, I can't imagine this either. Those families won't see this. Maybe a hundred train fans see it; that's all.

Look, if people, like me, don't like the Darwin bit, then we can not use it. If other people choose to, then maybe they have bad taste. But the idea that this thread is going to harm these families is ridiculous. There's a big difference between being tacky on a web forum, and being personally malicious and insensitive. Get over yourselves with these moral judgments.

I stop joggers in the street and ask them why they are jogging... the universal answer is that they are jogging for their health.

I tell them that their mother was a failure!

If you are jogging in the street you run the risk of being hit by a car, and that ain't healty.  You are also breathing heavily, sucking in great quantities of automobile exhaust and that ain't healthy either.

Thus you are not doing it to be healthy... you are just playing and you are doing it in the street, ergo, your mother was a failure for failing to teach you, not to play in the street!

Are you joking?  How is your message received?

Usually with a single finger salute and some language that I am forbidden to repeat in this forum.
