Fall has fell,

The leaves as well,

Have fallen to the ground.

And everyone knows, when the cold wind blows,

Jack Frost will soon be 'round.

Most of the leaves were still on the trees today, so my student engineer didn't have any problem with them.  But they are changing, although the colors this year are tending toward dull hues.  Soon enough, they'll be on the rails, with wet weather to help them stick to the rails.

Might as well just get out a grease gun and grease the rails.  You'll get better traction than on those leaves...

Locally - the first day of Fall is forecast to have a high of 90+

Never too old to have a happy childhood!

We're expecting a high of 73 today, a little warmer over the next few days.  Lynn's biggest complaint is that the days are getting too short, she prefers sunset to come at no earlier than 8:00 PM.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

The outside lights on our FD Banquet Hall are on a timer.  It's a constant chore to go in and reset the timer through the year so they come on at an appropriate time.  The 4PM-ish setting on December 21 is clearly overkill on June 21, when It's not dark until around 9:30...

We could put them on an eye, but I haven't been able to talk our folks into it yet.

Paul, I'm with Lynn 100 percent!

We got over an inch and a half of rain yesterday, but it wasn't enough to keep Pat and me away from LaGrange and the west end of Clearing Yard.  It was part of a weekend where I finally got some interesting new (and relettered) freight cars after about two weeks of starvation.  The Umler feed I use has gone in and out, making logging these things a challenge.

I'll actually make it to cardiac rehab all three times this week.  And on Friday I have an MRI and CT scan to map out the cancer lesions they found outside my spine.  Three zaps of intense, precisely-targeted radiation ought to take care of that.  My hope now is that that's what was causing my PSA numbers to go up.

Carl, I was sorry to hear that you have a recurrence of cancer. I hope that what you go through this week will be a turning point towards eradication of the trouble.

Three weeks from today, I expect to be on my way east, arriving in Chicago Tuesday afternoon, and leaving at 9:30 in the evening.

We are having cool weather now, 50-60 in the mornings and 70 or so in the afternoons.

Johnny, this is the same crack team that removed my prostate and followed up with a radiation regimen that kept me "clean" for so long afterwards.  No promises are being made, but they're zapping the only thing they can find on the scans, and have all of the confidence that this will take care of the problem.

Having said that, I won't be able to meet you on your eastbound trip, as Monday is a day for cardiac rehab (and will be then, unless radiation weakens me too much).

Carl, I was hoping for a little time to get together than we had last fall, but your meds take precedence over personal pleasure. I will be returning through Chicago the following Sunday, coming up from New Orleans in the mrongin, and leaving for here that afternoon.

If there is a possibility of seeing MC in Denver, I will go in to the station as soon as we get in--unless it is meal time for me, since I know now that visiting trains is frowned upon.

I just re-read your post, and I realized that you were thinking that I will be in Chiago Monday--I leave here early Monday morning, 15 October,, and supposedly arrive in Chicago Tuesday afternoon, 16 October.

Johnny, Tuesday is not a therapy day.  However, it's likely that plans will be made for me.  I can suggest that they include a trip to the city.

Damp day on the railroad.  Rained all through the initial terminal brake test.  Guess who was doing the walking...

After we parked the train for the day, the sun came out.  Go figure.

It's the same principle that can explain why the fog clears when your train goes from unsignalled to signaled trackage. (Thanks to the late John R. Crosby).

Thank you Brian S. for getting into Ma Kalmbach's closet and kicking the forum server really, really hard. (Down for 2+ days)....crickets were getting annoying.

Your tribe of 3 at Minneapolis a week ago probably saw the presentation on Uncle Pete's battle with the migrating mobile mud-monster near the Salton Sea (Yuma Sub near Brawley CA MP 662.65).....Maybe follow up with a magazine article on the UP/SP/Shannon & Wilson battle with the thing that now has CalTran's CA-111 now in its sights?

It's great to be back online!

Winter has arrived early in southwestern Alberta, southeastern BC, and Glacier National Park:

https://www.theweathernetwork.com/ca/news/article/calgary-alberta-saskatchewan-are-seeing-intense-snowstorm-in-the-prairies-that-could-be-record-breaking

Almost a whole METRE of snow at once!  For you American folks that's over 3 feet.

Greetings from Alberta

Yeah, the only “local news” on the topic is behind a paywall at the Imperial Valley Press online site. I still can't help myself from calling it the “Post-Press” after all of these years (“Morning Post” was the morning edition and “Imperial Valley Press” was the afternoon edition, basically the same stuff on most pages, as I recall).

It is interesting to look at some of the progression on Google Earth history images over the past few years.

While you're beginning to get buried alive, we're getting summer temperatures up to the low 80's for today and tomorrow.  After that, it's back to more seasonal temperatures in the 60's.

Not only Kalmbach had troubles this morning (and yesterday as well)--when I looked for the temperature about 7:00 this morning, the site that was supposed to give me the local temperature indicated a morning temperature in the eighties--when I was expecting it to read in the forties--somehow it showed the temperature for a place in Texas, not here at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains. The site has since been reformed.

Here in the SFBA Mother Nature can't decide what season it is. This past weekend average temps dropped from highs of ~90 to near 60 last night, warranting the return of the blanket to the bed. It is supposed to go back up, so it must be fall ....

In mudpot news, Caltrans has closed SR-111 on the east side of the Salton Sea requiring a long detour around the west side - ouch. Unfortunately our intrepid reporter in Hemet won't be allowed access to the site. Here are some details:

 https://dot.ca.gov/caltrans-near-me/district-11/current-projects/SR111-NilandGeyser

 https://www.desertusa.com/desert-california/niland-geyser.html

It's no fun dealing with events that happen on a geologic time scale.

UP started responding to it and talking about it like it was a sentient being. Especially after it changed course and blew right by a sheet pile wall. (And it's hungry - 140 air dumps worth of rip-rap just vanished into the caldron. Snack?... and the mud-monster gets gas Ick!...))

USGS has never encountered anything quite like what's going on here.

The canada geese are NOT getting the message to start heading south. Life is good in the Denver area (still green!) and its getting tough to avoid these guys hanging out in medians and traffic circles around here. Goose poop is becoming an issue again.

Currently +74F here in northern NY, with a thunderbumper moving through.  Got just short of an inch of rain early this morning, and this storm may double that.

The barometer has been dropping like a rock all day, and the humidity is super high right now - both bad signs.

And, on top of that, the TV weather lady tells us this +74F will likely be the high for the entire week...  We won't quite make it to freezing here in the lowlands, but the Adirondacks will very likely see another freeze.
