The ELD is directly connected to the Trucks ECM or engine computer. It logs all actions as they happen. It detects all speeds as they occur. You get over a set speed it automatically switches you from either On Duty Not Driving or Offduty not driving the only to options it allows for non driving time unless the brakes are set then sleeper berth is allowed. Also if your in an accident our ECM's have a 2 day recording function to catch any problems on a truck to begin with for intermittent issues. Also the latest EPA and FMCSA have made it a 250 GRAND fine to defeat any emission control equipment on any OTR truck sold with a current year engine installed in the truck. CARB has made that fine close to 1 million dollars per truck in the fleet. If your a company with over 100 trucks that runs California you risking 100 million dollars on a surprise Inspection. Guess I'm in the 15% then. Got smacked in March 2017 when I went thru a green light and an 18-wheeler ran the red light at about 35 mph, according to the state trooper who witnessed the accident and wrote it up. Luckily, I was in a Crown Vic, he hit the left rear door and quarter panel rather than the door next to me, and the car spun around rather than rolling over. Always thought the truck driver was distracted by cell phone or something, but will never know for sure. Real shame the car was totaled - it had been my mother's, my wife and I bought it from her estate and poured money into it for 3 years, and it was finally almost in perfect condition. It was 21 years old but only had 87,000 miles on it; I could have driven it another 15 years. After the cops were done with their stuff, they hit the fuel pump reset button and drove that tough old beast out of the intersection. I had some minor neck and shoulder issues afterward but wasn't seriously hurt. Still irks me that some jerk doing something he shouldn't have been doing caused me all that hassle.
