I was curious as to why the conductor must walk back to his train from the switch stand after the local enters the main? Couldn't he align the switch for the main and ride the last car past the  grade crossing and then reboard the engine?

I believe the train needs to be clear of block before the switch can be moved.

I see the signal bridge east of the switch on Google Earth. Thanks for the info.
