The comet theory is interesting - and completely believable.
It's not surprising that no pieces of the comet have been found - comets are mostly frozen material. What did survive would be indistinguishable from the thousands of space rocks that have made it to earth since. And considering the devastation, picking out some BB sized remnants would be impossible.
But it still doesn't have the cachet of the story of Mrs Leary's cow.

YoHo1975AH Door County, I miss it so. I could go for an Alby Burger (The Albatross, Washington Island, where the term North of the Tension Line was invented.) Having said that, WTF is going on in this thread? I really wish that people that don't live in California would keep their theories and bad information to themselves. I'll let you know if I ever get fined for water use. Prediction? It won't happen.

zardozPeshtigo fire as reported by the Weather Service:
Door County North of the Fire line in the Thumb still has the old growth forest at Pinnesula State Forest. If your ever up there take a look, in places it hasn't been touched or bull dozed by man and you can see why Pestigo was such an inferno.

erikemOne thng that helps is clearing the fuel before fire season - and I remember when Thousand Oaks passed a weed abatement ordinance in the early 60's (note the woolsey fire that took out Malibu was just east of T.O.).
Such growth is often a factor in those fires, and has been a focus for fire prevention in the past. And, as mentioned, those "wonderful" wooden roofs.
I've seen pictures of houses still standing amidst the devastation - houses built with non-flammable roofs and flame resistant siding.
alphasFor what its worth, I had some highly respected forestry professors tell me about 10 years ago that the current west coast forests had either reached their peak condition or would do so no later than 2020. The only ways to avoid a fairly rapid decline of their condition would be to resume modern logging [which also clears out underbrush], do controlled burning, or allow nature's normal fire burning [lighting] to play a role. Otherwise they warned of what I assume is happening today--massive fire loads building up and increased forest diseases due to the aging of the timber.
Agree with everything you said except not sure I would say there is a cap on fire damage caused by excessive leaf litter and such. I think the more there is the longer the fire burns and it burns at greater intensity. If he is saying a firestorm with fire tornados is the max it ever is going to get......I would agree with that but that is an extreme most humans do not want to see. It would be a virtual hell on earth..........like the Peshtigo Forest Fire of Northern Wisconsin........couldn't blame that one on the Irish at least (heh-heh....Chicago).
erikemn regards to the fires, we did have a couple of wet winters and all that water does promote the growth of fuel. Couple this with a dry summer, and Santa Ana/Diablo winds, major fires are almost a certainty - seen that happen many times over the years. One thng that helps is clearing the fuel before fire season
True but the amount of leaf litter and underbrush make a difference in burn temperature (fire intensity), fire duration, and the damage caused. If the fire burns too hot it will destroy the ability of the forest to regenerate without human intervention. Higher temp fires also likely to burn more structures nearby via heat transfer alone (forget about the embers on the dried out wood shingles bit).
A quick brush fire fueled by catabolic wind and not much litter on the ground is going to blow right on by a subdivision with usually minimal damage if the grasslands are managed properly. Otherwise with lots of litter on the ground the fire will dwell and burn longer before it goes out.

Some places in the Rocky Mountain states make a point of sending an info packet to newcomers reminding them that they don't live in a big city and don't expect big city services. Related to that are reminders that if you move next to a hog farm, then don't complain about the odors and noise coming from said farm.

Firelock76Only if they bring their voting habits with them that made the mess they're running away from. Otherwise they'll just repeat the mistakes, reproduce what they fled from, and eventually move on again like a swarm of locusts.
Firelock-- Thats what would happen and is happening. We are all surrounded every day 24/7 non stop by a progressive agenda. NFL, NBA, major networks, print media. Facebook, Google, Apple, and now those fleeing its consequences surrounding those who still believe in free markets, limited government and individual liberty.
If only we had kept the local, the roundhouse, the station and slowed down a bit ... but I hope you can all come together and work it out.
As for us up here in Canukistan, well, I'm waiting for the Chinese invasion and takeover. You know which line they would take first?...Churchill!... off load deep sea port, en masse straight shot to Winnipeg, cut the country in two and its all over.

Perhaps we should be waiting at the border, just as the Californians so often did in the '30s, and be ready to give them a welcome similar to what they offered then.

You know the old saying, "Live and learn?" Well if you live but don't learn what does that say about you?
Shadow the Cats owner Right now the standard is 55 gallons dropping to 50 in 2022 however the Legislature is changing that to 40 by 2020 according to several friends we have in California.
Nothing against their conservation efforts, given the situation, but doesn't it usually happen that once you set such limits you end up having more water than you know what to do with? Imagine that, they'll end up with water just flowing down the rivers and into the sea!

If so, prove it. Unknown sources don't count.
Dare I ask what exactly you folks are doing in the shower? lol. I run around 1500 a month but that is at the hieght of Summer with the lawn sprinklers running twice a week, shower every day. So approx your average is near 1550-1600 a month per person and that is restricted to house use only? That is an extremely generous amount of water. Texas doesn't limit via fines, so uncivilized. Instead Texas raises the price per gallon significantly over specific limits.

Not that I expect such a limitation here (I don't even have municipal water, but if I did, it would come from Lake Ontario), that would be a good reason to keep my well in service...
Euclid Shadow the Cats owner And you can't use more than 40 gallons of water per person per day or you're in violation of another law out there. That's right California just put a new regulation for a maximum of 40 gallons of water per person per day. So no washing dishes and clothes in the same day. No long showers. Better living thru regulations that is the California way. Does the water meter shut off the water after 40 gallons, or does it just print out a ticket?

"Laffer and Moore say that the effective income-tax rate (what people actually pay) for high earners in California will jump from 8.5 percent to 13 percent. Wealthy Manhattanites would face a similar increase, they say. Those who make $10 million or more will see a potential tax hike of 50 percent or more, according to their analysis. Those hikes, they say, will cause an exodus of residents to move to lower or no-income tax states."

During the Great Depression desperate people immigrated to California. They loaded up junk vehciles and headed west. Those who did not even have a junk vehicle hopped freight trains to reach the Golden State.
