How can I find a woman and future wife that shares my passion for trains and model railroading?
Posted by CandOforprogress2 on Monday, February 12, 2018 3:23 PM

Tired of this sausage party. I am getting ready to settle down and dont just want a woman who will put up with my hobby. Model Railroader for years had cartoons of husbands fighting with there befuddled wives over the expance of there model railroad empire taking over the house. I need a seat partner that I can cuddle with and wake up on a moments notice when a rare diesal goes by. I want the china in my house to be C&O diningware and the door bell to be a train whistle when the paperboy needs to be paid for the month. I need a woman who can cook up oyster stuffing in the turkey for thanksgiving. and OH by the way knowns the meaning of Kiss and Ride lots

Go back to April of 1971, board a train that will be discontinued at the end of the month, and strike up a conversation with a woman who has enjoyed riding trains most of her life.

Well..., April 1st is not for a long time, so this thread may be premature.

Otherwise, there are many, many websites dedicated to helping a man raise his SMV, so I'll let you search for that on your own (I'm NOT going to start with the Alpha/Beta/Omega Blue/Red stuff right now). Don't bring up your hobby at first (what's the percentage of eligible single female railfans anway?), instead start with meetup groups having across gender appeal like live music, dining or outdoor walks...

Your priorities, IMO, are skewed in the wrong direction.  Find the woman you want to be the mother of your children first, marry her. Then put the burden upon yourself to find the balance between family and hobby.  Learn to make concessions, abide by them. And all the while never let her forget that the trainset is for junior, she'll know better, but it makes it harder for her to put her foot down without looking selfish.

Is that what you did, Johnny?

Good suggestion, either way.  Where's H.G. Wells???

Yes, Paul, essentially it worked out that way. One of the strange things about the meeting was I had originally planned to go to Chiago (I was living west of Tuscaloosa at the tiem) and take the Santa Fe's southern route to Los Angeles and return on the Overland Route--but 2 1/2 days before leaving I decided to take the Q/ NP/SP&S to Portland and the UP/Milw back. We met about an hour out of Portland as she was on her way back to Boise, completing her first trip west of Boise.

There are women that are railfans out there.    Just because Trains Magazine Staff is oblivious to them and refuses to cover them doesn't mean they do not exist.   I ran into Female railfans on Blue Water Michigan Chapter, trips.   20th Century Railroad Club Trips, even on regular Amtrak Trains.    Ran into one at Christmas on the Texas Eagle northbound.   A good portion are unmarried and some are even looking for a husband.   Just open your eyes and be a little more observant.

Also, if you dress like a Japanese Tourist but instead with railroad regalia pinned all over your clothes......that kind of nerdy stuff kind of turns them away.    Just be normal and listen carefully when others talk.

You might pause for a while and ponder what you have to offer to someone else.

Also, people that chronically show that they have a need to visit an optometrist for ‘eye’ problems very, very seldom find a mate. Eradicating the word “I” from one’s vocabulary is much, much better than seeing an optometrist.

And, get used to talking to people and understanding what makes THEM tick, male and female, the aged and young.  When that special one comes along you will be a conversation natural.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- K.P.’s absolute “theorem” from early, early childhood that he has seen over and over and over again: Those that CAUSE a problem in the first place will act the most violently if questioned or exposed.

Been married a few times, through heartache and trouble I find my self now alone. A shopping spree on E Bay and now perhaps I find my perfect girl is made of foam.

Why does the OP sound a lot like Howard Wollowitz on "The Big Bang Theory"?  The woman he's looking for and the woman who will put up with him are probably not the same person.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

Randy, this is the genesis of a near-perfect country song.  It almost fits 'Gentle on my Mind' already, too.  More, please.  Where does the oyster stuffing/dressing, the train whistle, and the new wife's surprise when he carries her over the boxcar sill instead of the threshold come in?

Thumbs Up

She must be kind, loving, tolerant of (even enthusiastic about) my interests, and look like Christie Brinkley...

(Or insert your own favorite supermodel, as desired/appropriate.)

I can't help you for Valentine's Day, but let me pass along a bit of advice, and be patient with the long story.

Back in 1975 I was an officer student at the Basic School for Marine officers in Quantico VA.  I overheard some of the other lieutenants asking a staff captain just where in the area was a good place to meet girls.

His answer?  "Go to church boys, even if you're not religious!  I'm serious as a heart attack! You'll meet plenty of good young women there looking for someone.  If you're in there, they'll know you're OK, if they're in there you can be sure they're OK.  Trust me, it works!"

I didn't need the advice myself, being engaged to Lady Firestorm at the time.

Did it work?  It must have, I remember several marriages toward the end of the six-month program!

The railfan and rail modeler part I can't help you with, but you never know.  I remember reading a letter in (maybe) Model Railroader years ago where the writer said the model railroad he set up in the basement of his frat house seemed to be just as attactive to members of the fairer sex as a guy with a car was!
