For whatever reason, a "Search the Community " box has appeared at the right hand side of my screen. It's there among the ads for jewely and vitamins. Hold my beer and watch this! I'm about to disappear down a rabbit hole!
Thanks to Chris / CopCarSS for my avatar.
It has been there for several months - it's operation is somewhat klunky and provides more 'answers' than what you were looking for.
Never too old to have a happy childhood!
It may have been on your screen for months, but the opportunity to search the community and buy ugly purple fake jewelry is something brand new to my Trains Forums experience!
Well durn it, I only get the search screen and the Trains ads, none of the fake purple jewlery stuff....lucky you!

I will say with the placement of the Search Box, Trains has done it's best to 'hide it in plain view', as it falls off the 1st page inmage you view. If you only view the 1st page that is presented to you - you will never see it. You have to page down and look for it - just a plain single box with 'Search the Community' above it type color and font that appear designed to be hidden.

Sending it on to Murphy - he can decorate his cabin with it.

Ummm...pretty sure he already has a date, Mookie. At least, if Murphy sees the same ads I see, he's so there.
THis was the one that caught my fancy!
Must be close to Jim Wrinn's vacation neighborhood?

a little bit of the descripotion of this 'little' place in the North Carolina mtns!
FTA"...The lodge was built in the 1930’s by senior executives of the Southern Railroad Company, the tracks of which meander past the property on their way up to Black Mountain. (Don’t think for a moment you’re going to hear train whistles. The few trains simply lumber on by across the creek and make for an entertaining sight.) For anyone with a love of trains, this like going back to the days of the steam locomotive. Throughout the lodge are artifacts of parts of trains that have been incorporated into the structure and décor. Huge steel bridge trusses supporting the upper floor are exposed as part of the ceiling of the lower level game room. Massive steel drive rods from engines are used as andirons in one of the four stone fireplaces. All memorabilia as well as all linens, bedding, furniture, cookware, appliances, lamps, rugs, etc., convey with the property..."
Next question is is there a lawn [29+ acres] service close by????

Maybe there are different ads for different areas? All I see are rotating ads for cheap jewelry, vitamins and occasionally the ad for the resort that Sam mentions. Maybe they target forum members based on some criteria we don’t understand? That apparently lumps me in with the crowd that is malnourished, likes cheap women’s costume jewelry and dreams of moving to a lush, southern vacation home.

The ads I see in my internet travels generally mimmick items that I may have looked at for possible purchase at one internet site or another. Likewise the YouTube selections for my possible viewing have a relation to the videos I have recently been viewing.

I am frequently "presented" with ads regarding items I may have searched for recently. If I looked for antenna connectors, I'll get all sorts of ads for antenna connectors. I've been known to do a few searches just so I can see different stuff pop up.

Does it bother anyone that your every keystroke is being monitored by MS or its many relatives? I can go to a commercial website to look for a product, then search within that site for a product (not Google, Bing or any general search), then for a week or two every time I sign on, I'm bombarded with ads for that product.

All web sites share activity information with all advertisers (yeah, I said "All" in both places). Even what you watch on YouTube is tracked. I NEVER watch YouTube, except when I am using "InPrivate" browsing (Incognito in other browsers) to mask who I am. I ALWAYS delete all cookies off my computer at the end of the day, and yet when I go watch a YouTube video a week later, the list on the right will be populated with the same genre that I watched the last week... and advertisments that get by my filters (Hosts file) will be associated with any video I watched that might have had a product in it.
I call it an invasion of privacy, but $$$ rule the world and I am just a voice crying in the wilderness.
P.S.: I do not have a YouTube account, either!

My favorite moment ever on the Trains Magazine Forum-
Some years back, there was advertising along the right side of the forum pages. The ads would sort of mimic the content of whatever the hot topic was at the time. There was a long running thread about train headlights. That produced a lot of ads for buying light bulbs and fixtures online. Once there was a rather heated discussion about the Milwaukee Road transcontinental route going through the corner of North Dakota. At one point a forum member referred to another member as being the village idiot. Before too long, along came an ad on the right side. I kid you not>> “Find communities of Idiots in North Dakota”.
When I typed my comment, Murphy, there were three ads, two of which were identical, and those two were for a 'we're not like the others' dating site. Why they appeared on my page is beyond me...I don't do...ummm....dating...and that's my story. At the moment it's an ad for 'retreatrealty.net'. The other two ghosted squares won't fill in. Maybe they sense they've hurt my feelings and will spare me repeats of the dating site ads.
I don't have any ads. Really! I used to have all the ads they could post about subjects we were discussing, but somewhere along the line, I lost all ads on the right side.
I don't want them back, but it does make it a little confusing when I can't figure out the purple jewelry and the dating - until someone explains it.
I am pretty puter illiterate; don't even have spell check on here. When in doubt, Google it. I feel so helpless and so happy to feel that way re: ads!

Did the women in those ads seem nutritionally healthy and have poor taste in costume jewelry? Maybe it’s a conspiracy. If aluminum foil ads start showing up we know the system is rigged. Today’s ads are for X-Box and online stock trading. So much for targeting prospective customers based on their habits.

I have three identical ads for a local bank. Aside from having a cousin who works there, I have no association with the bank, on-line, or otherwise.
Edit: After posting this, the main screen came back with two ads for insurance and one "blank screen."
I don't get any ads at all. There was a time when in my email I would find an ad at the bottome of a message that had some relation to the content of the message. Somebody saw to it that I don't get such now.

Currently, on this thread page as I type this, I can: Subscribe to 12 Issues of Railroading News, Maps and a FREE GIFT! (I already subscribe.) Reduce my IT expenses by 38%. Buy my cat a new cat bed. Donate the old one, they'll even come pick it up. And insure everything on line and paperless. I can even Search the Community (and find everything except what I'm actually searching for).

I run Ghostery over Firefox with all the privacy options turned on, on a Mac running nothing newer than 10.9.5, and aside from the 'newsletter signup' and the Search the Community box (which I've been asking to see here for over three years ... thanks, guys! ... I see nothing but four gray horizontal rectangles and a long, long column of beautiful white space.
Meanwhile, over on the iPhone, this latest system 'upgrade' has completely lunched the ability to paste anything into a post using the button tools; it's almost as if the programmers were wilfully teasing users by making the interface do things it shouldn't even be capable of doing, let alone default to. Still tells you that you can't access PMs after you click on the notice from Kalmbach that you have a PM, too. I won't go into how useless the site is from any usability standpoint, either reading or trying to post, if you make the mistake of trying to go to the 'mobile site' or whatever they call it ... at least on any Apple handheld device I own. (And of course the 'sitecore' forum, the whole thing, has been inaccessible for any kind of posting for quite some time, that supposedly being the place where you are supposed to post any issues with the Kalmbach forum software in the first place ... wonder if there are people in tech who say 'there isn't any problem ... we haven't read any complaints so it must be fine!'
In my opinion it is not fine.
(But Jeff ... do the cat beds look like a good value?)
I jsut have an adblock extension turned on. I see nothing.
It's been fun. But it isn't much fun anymore. Signing off for now.

Cannot get link to work right.
I used to get ads for hot chicks. Now it's sexy senior citizens.
Eastrail11First post on the forum, YAY. I currently have a Trains magazine ad, a UPS ad, a FL lottery ad(never played the lottery or anything of the sorts), and a blank screen. I hope this is the proper way to reply without having to quote someone...
Murphy SidingDo you want someone to forward the ad for the cat bed?Devil
Mine would sleep in the box it came in.
Mine would sleep in the plastic bag I was throwing it away in.
