Since we got on the subject of deer encounters--

In the early 1970's I was driving in eastern California or western Nevada in the wee hours when a deer appeared in headlights crossing the road.   I hit the brakes and went skidding down the road, and the deer apparently jumped clear.    After recovering my composure, I continued driving, and a few minutes later the same thing happened again.   This time as I resumed driving it occurred to me that the second deer was in exactly the same position as the first one, and I began to wonder if it existed at all.   I pulled into the next rest area and went to sleep.   I had experienced hallucinations from sleep deprivation before (and since).    Later, as I thought more about the incident, I began to wonder if the first deer existed.   It looked exactly like the pictures on the deer-crossing signs.   The mind is a mysterious thing.

BUT - was the deer crossing at the defined Deer Crossing area?  Should have been ticketed if is wasn't.WhistlingWhistlingWhistling

I was on my way to my son's place in MD a few years ago.  I was off the major highways, and only a few minutes from his house, and called him to say so.

As he said "watch out for deer" one came in from my left.  I just clipped it with the bumper and sent it spinning into the ditch.  Didn't stop and check it.  Don't know what I'd have done with it if I did kill it.

You never dressed a deer out? Neither have I; I do know that you cut a certain part off as soon as possible.

I never dressed a chicken, either; my mother took care of that after I had killed one.

A number of years ago with my Dodge Daytona Turbo I as driving back from have the car Emissions Tested on a 40 MPH road in the rain - a group of 3 or 4 deer decided to cross the road - first 3 or whatever made it, the last one 'hit the brakes', but his hoves didn't have any more traction on wet asphalt than my tires did.  He slid the last 8 feet with his hoves locked and knocked off the drivers side mirror assembly.  Shook his head and completed the crossing.

LaughThanks, MC for an early morning laugh.

My sole experience with deer came when some friends invited me to hunt with them. I borrowed a shotgun, stood where I was told to stand--and waited for one to be driven near me. Someone else shot one, and I was given some of the meat after it was dressed--and my mother cooked it for me when she visited me soon thereafter.

I did worry somewhat in later years when I would  be driving down from Snowbird, but I do not recall seeing any along the way while in Little Cottonwood Canyon.

Need to post help wanted sign for wolves and hunters at that location. I'd tell you to send the repair bill to ACLU or ASPCA, but they would counter with a harrasment nuissance lawsuit.

She didn't see it until it was in the air trying to jump over the car. Only going maybe 35mph. We were expecting State Farm to scrap it. It's a 2003 Cadillac CTS. What saved it was it's 'normal' condition with only 74,000 miles on a 14-15 year old car that's been extremely well cared for. This was our 3rd deer attack, 1 was a near miss. 10-12 years ago turned a corner in the dark to find 12-15 deer crossing, missed all but the last one that decided to sit on the right front corner of the van until it had done $1500 worth of modifications, then ran off. Got the van fixed, picked it up, driving home 'in the dark', turned the same corner AND the tag team was nback in the same spot. This time I missed them ALL by maybe a foot or so. Probably hear from the animal rights people or ACLU or someone for attacking these poor helpless moving targets.

My experience with a deer was in Brown County State Park in Indiana. I was driving North about 10 mph on a park road when deer on the West side of the road decided they wanted to be on the East side. One hit my car in my drivers door. I stopped got out and a ranger who was behind me stopped. After a couple on minutes, the deer shook it head stood up, ant took off into the brush on the East side of the road. Put a nice depression on the door panel. I forgot to ask it why it couldn't see a thing as big as a car. Ranger didn't do anything. Don't remember what it cost to get the door fixed. Glad to hear your wife is ok.

Wife decided to have one on one with a deer sat. am. She lost. Deer ran away, I had her drive to the body shop. Dropped it off and in about 10 days and $3400.00 later she can try again.

Of course the deer filed a report with the police that it was assaulted by a battery and the attached car!

$3400 for you, lifetime arthritis for the deer.

Gave a little thought to this one, The best part of this is that Carl is able to get out and do some train watching!  Some time back , many of us were very concerned about where ' his diagniosis' was going to lead him[ just like our current concern is for "Houstion Ed" [Ed Blysard, Ms. Mookie's nickname seems to fit pretty well!] he seems to strike positive notes when he writes {A good thing!] .

Glad to hear Carl, and (his) Pat are getting along with their health issues; keeping thoughts, hopes and prayers for Ed's recovery.  It seems that in some quarters thie Forum has not only fired the interests of many in various aspects of the hobby we follow and in some cases practice at the 1" to 1' scale. But along the way it takes up a sort of Social media, aspect as well. IMHO, not necessarily a 'bad' thing. Just some thoughts, on a crisp, fall morning....While looking out the back window at the JBH stacker parked across the fence.. Hope everyone has a great day Whistling

This is about train-watching, or train-missing, or whatever, on a more or less typical day when I'm walking (hence totally incapable of "chasing" a train). I left the house today at 2:00, and as soon as I got out the door, I heard a freight going westbound, followed by what had to be an inbound scoot. As I got to the mailbox a block from the tracks, the gates at the crossing on Elizabeth started to go down. It looked like it was going to be an auto-rack train going west (track 2), but surprise! it was a manifest, and had a few good cars for me!

While I was shopping, I heard the distinctive sound of a Metra F40PH leading a westbound scoot. (I was given a "senior discount--don't be offended!", but that's not relevant.) I got out of there in time for another westbound train to drop the gates. This was a stack train, on track 2 (he was hauling ass, and I wondered if he'd catch up to the scoot on Track 3, which was only in Glen Ellyn, according to the block signals).

When I crossed the tracks to go home, there was ANOTHER headlight off to the east! It looked like he was also on track 2, meaning that the previous stack train had crossed over to 2 in front of him, most likely from Track 1 (I'd say that track 3 would be more normal, but I suspect that he might have been following the scoot too closely to be traveling the way he was). Anyway, as soon as I could determine that this last train was moving (traffic crossing Grace Street had stopped), I stuck around for it. It was another stack train (and yes, he was on Track 2), but I got some notes off it anyway. I went home after that, without seeing or hearing anything else. So I saw three trains, missed three more, and took maybe 40 or 45 minutes out of the house, as I was back well before 3.

As much as I like to see other trains in other busy places, I fully realize that I live in a spot where the traffic would keep me fairly busy...I'm at the point were I have to juggle my time between making my sightings and processing them...and, of course, doing all of the necessary things like helping keep the home light bulbs glowing! It's still a wonderful life!

This morning I looked at my wrist to see what time it was and remebered that I haven't worn a watch in probably 10 years. I now have an electronic pocket watch that also works as a phone, camera, alarm clock, computer, etc.

Ain't technology wonderful?Whistling  I have a digital Timex on my wrist that can serve as an alarm clock and stopwatch.  I also have a dumb cell phone that serves as voice telephone, text messager and camera.  Don't need or want any other functions.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

Watched a bit of the Michigan massacre of Minnesota after the train show Saturday night.  Nothing today, sports-wise.

But the Great NY State Train Expo is in the books.  Looked to be a good turnout, and we talked to a lot of people.  Hopefully a lot of them will come to ride!

Congrats to Brian and his Iowa Hawkeyes. Our team lost something somewhere.I did like the end of the first quarter. They have the whole staduim turn and wave at the people and patients at the childrens hospital.I hope that traditon continues.

That game was unbelievable for both teams!  WOW.  As for the wave, I'm sure it will continue as long as there are children up there to wave at.  I love it when even the visiting team gets in on it.

Speaking of smoke alarms--I just found out that I have a "smart" smoke alarm.   It woke me up about 1:00 AM with a quick chirp to remind me to change the battery.   Unfortunately, it was about 25 hours ahead of schedule.

Don't forget to set the clocks back tonight.  Also change the smoke detector batteries.

My cell phone and cable box will "autocorrect."  That'll get me out the door to the train show on time.  Everything else, I can fix at my leisure.

Hopefully, everyone is gradually changing over to the newer smoke alarms that have a ten year battery in them.  It's still a good idea to test them monthly.

Joe,

My bedside clock set itself back a week or two ago. It's old and still on the previous settings for DST. The timer for the coffee maker has been adjusted. I want my coffee first thing in the morning and I'm too impatient to wait. Timex watch has been moved to the 24 hour mode in case the others forget.

None of my favorite teams are in the Series this year, but I'm rooting for Houston anyhow.

I suspect that town is noisy at this point, unlike the Dodger offense tonight.  I suspect Ed and a lot of his neighbors are smiling big about now.

It is, and we are....
