My wi-fi router has apparently decided to die.  The wi-fi works, but not the port to connect to the 'Net.  Time for a trip to the office supply store.

Verizon replaced my modem/router last week - it works more consistantly than the old one, but it isn't perfect.

Had a nice ride on the Mount Hood RR excursion to Parkdale, OR today- got to experience negotiating a switch-back, one of only four on standard gauge in the US.

Verizon replaced my modem/router last week - it works more consistantly than the old one, but it isn't perfect.

The cable modem is still working fine - and is the one I got from the cable company (also has my phone).  It appears the "input" ethernet port that connected to the cable router was giving up the ghost.  There's a new wifi router sitting there now, and working fine...

Now, back to work getting ready for this weeks SPAAMFAA national convention.  Made an appearance on local TV this morning to push it.

My wife just pointed out a train derailment up in Calmar, IA.  Appears to be no big deal, a rail turned over.  Happened on the Central Pacific Railroad, so KCRG-TV says.

Maybe if they had read the name on the side of the engine instead of just the C P on the nose...

Well, well. After reading the news story, I wondered why it is that so many people refer to a single track road as having "tracks." (The story read that the "tracks" should be repaired tonight.)

Also, the video continually stopped playing, do I gave up listening to it. I do want to go to supper tonight.

Maybe the newsworker remembered his lesson on the Transcontinental RR a little too well. I'm sure the local CN public affairs rep is in no hurry to correct the numbskull. (as in   http://www.hark.com/clips/vhpmqvmcrb-quiet-numbskulls    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNYu1Y8pGh4  )

Well, the beginning activities for the SPAAMFAA convention went smoothly.  The attendees are arriving - more will be here in the morning, for sure, and the fire trucks are arriving as well.

Looks like some damp weather coming our way.  Don't mind a widely scattered shower, but we don't need constant rain, especially on Saturday for the muster.

I won four tickets to "Ride The Train" on the Coopersville & Marne Railroad.  Currently entertaining possibilities for three (or four) guests to ride the railroad in western Michigan.

This railroad is still connected with the national railroad network in Grand Rapids, probably via the Mid-Michigan Railroad.  The City of Coopersville definitely likes and supports this line, on which an ex-GTW SW1200 pulls three even more ancient passenger cars to Marne and pushes them back (or the other way around) at about 10 m.p.h.

I actually don't know how I'll feel about taking this trip.  In my pre-railroad career I rode this line often, when it was part of the Grand Trunk Western.  We trundled along between Grand Haven and Grand Rapids at about 35 m.p.h.  I'd ride in either the locomotive cab or the caboose.  In fact, the engine the C&M now uses is one that I'd ridden on back then.

I'l have to give my brother grief on that as he lives a few miiles away in Decorah - hopefully the derailment had nothing to do with the Nordic Fest held last weekend, never know what the lutefisk fumes can do...

Update: My brother e-mailed pix released by the sheriff's department, showing the rails flopped over, what appears to be a break near a weld and a spike pulled most of the way out next to the rail. Does make me wonder about track maintennance.

August is our hottest month.  52 @ 7:30a - so much for hot.  WA, OR and N CA seem to have all our heat.  Someone must have bumped the weather table and knocked it all to the left.

'Pop Up' Thunderstorms around the area yesterday evening.  None of them where I was, however, where they did hit they were dangerous.  Falling tree crushed a passing car and killed a 14 year old passenger in the car.

We're getting some nasty weather in the area right now.  I hope it gets it out of its system by tomorrow - the big fire apparatus muster starts at 9AM.

Took over 100 convention-goers for a ride on the railroad today.  They all seemed to enjoy it.  After the ride, they got to see the local fire department (including a early 1900's Cadillac fire truck) and eat at the local restaurants.

Was going to set up some stuff tonight at the muster site, but there are severe warnings out...

We had a cool day in which it barely made it out of the 50s, with a strong breeze.  I was able to make the first pass on the front yard, and a trip with the yard broom, between sprinkles.  Now, this evening, the sky has cleared, and we're getting our warmest temperatures of the day.

Perhaps I should finish the front lawn.

This week, I started getting my fat butt out on my bike.  Just riding the local rail-trail, but we've had some beautiful mornings.

I'm lucky that I have a choice of nice trails really close to me.  Plus, I've been getting a little soft in the mid-sections itting in that seat these past few months.

I'm barely above training wheel stage, but some would argue I'm the same with my engineer abilities.

It's been fun.  But it isn't much fun anymore.   Signing off for now.

In my area - most of the trails still have active rails!  I have had too many acquaintences killed and/or seriously injured to desire to ride a bike.  I'll walk.

good evening

Deshler was interesting today.People from the forum and some from my old hometown were there.Csx had an autorack train make the wrong turn in Toledo.X-276 is suppossed to go from Toledo to Willard via Fostoria. They went south across the diamond in the middle of the Deshler parade. Then they tried to back up using the switch at south Deshler. That caused the autoracks to upcouple. So the had to use the another switch further north. They backed around the SW wye then got to go east to Willard. The conductor had quite a ride on the back.Need to get to bed.Mission festival at church in the morning.

Well, something going on around LNK - only 3 trains (coal, grain, AMTK) in 2 hours

Amtrak #6 went thru at 9:24 - heading for CHI.  Normal time is 3+am, so not sure if today's train or yesterdays (fly over & thru country, you know).  But - unusual beside the late time was a UP engine on point with 2 Amtrak engines - couldn't tell if they were working or not - AND a lot of coaches - full!  Usually we see, if at all, about 7 coaches max.  This had to be closer to 15.  Will never know why, but just reporting an observation.  I just told my driver my plausible story.  Sounded good to both of us.

Well, two years of hard work and organization, 300 member attendees, and who knows how many at the muster, and the antique fire truck event is finally over (except for the critiques, etc).  By all reports everyone was impressed - one of the smoothest such events in most people's memories.

I slept in this morning...

We took over 100 of the attendees on a field trip on the railroad on Friday - they thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
