Started the day with a pretty good thunderbumper, and there have been scattered showers around all day.  One area lost power for a while - the lights dimmed several times at my house at about that time (and as the storm came through).

Keeping an eye on Irma - looks like she's made a mess already.  We may see what's left of her up this way eventually.

Tree.  It does not look good for state of Georgia.  Emergency prepardness is lacking compared to Florida as our posters can remember past incidents here. Our area now has a 40% chance of winds greater than 49 MPH.  So am buttoning down hatches and getting chain saws tuned up.  Fully expect electricity to fail as the system is very fragile.

Maybe just maybe track will change ?

Irma is expected in the area Tuesday.  My dughter and son-in-law are glad the moved from Boca Raton to Hagerstown, MD last year.

How do the over-cafeinated weather folks determine the track of a hurricane?  All I see is tracks that run mostly west and then take a 90 right hand turn into Florida? Why wouldn't it continue west? Does the land mass work as a magnet or something for hurricanes?

Thanks to Chris / CopCarSS for my avatar.

Murphy Siding
How do the over-cafeinated weather folks determine the track of a hurricane?

Computers.  And history.

That's the only way to crunch the kinds of numbers necessary.

There are dozens of "what if's" to consider.  If this cold front (and there is one in the mix) does this, then the storm will do that.  If the cold front lags, the storm will do something else.

It's been pointed out on another forum I'm on that the storm stalled over Texas for similar reasons - other weather features.

If you watch the forecast tracks over time, you'll see that they start out widely scattered, but as time progresses (and they have a better idea what other weather systems will be doing), they start to tighten up, as they have for Irma.

Hurricanes will do all sorts of do-si-does - at least one of the forecast tracks for Irma shows a couple of loops once the storm comes inland.  Look for problems in the Ohio River valley if it does.

Hurricanes do do their own things. Remember the one that ended up as a heavy rainstorm in 1969--and took out a bridge on the Southern's main line in Virginia. That gave me a trip through Raleigh and Richmond on the Crescent.

evening

Have family in the panhandle of Florida and near Cocoa.Watching closely.Ns local was uptown when I left work.Ran errands this afternoon at home.Heard q 147 was a little longer than expected, needed some waybills for the extra cars and was running short on time to get to Garrett. They got it figured out and dispatcher told the train to get as close to Garrett as possible. The ND&W is doing more trackwork and took 18 cars back to NS.Thing is the train isn't getting very far unless they moved the MOW equipment in Cecil Ohio. They also have plenty of cars for storage as well.Going to get to bed.More to do in the morning.

Odds are if Irma makes it this far north, it'll be as a rain event.  There's not usually much punch left by the time they get here.  For the folks in the "zone," good luck.  Looks like Irma will arrive as all she can be, hurricane-wise.

One meme on FB said if only Irma could just hit one specific point on Florida (it was politically oriented) which completely ignores the fact that Irma will essentially cover Florida from top to bottom, coast to coast, all at the same time.  That is one big storm.

Current Hurricane Center maps show it stalling in the area of the Georgia, Alalbama, Tennessee states conjunction.  Depending how much rain is left in the storm these area could be in big trouble.

Went down to my former workplace - to say goodbye before they leave for Jacksonville.  The office looks like it hasn't been maintained since the day EHH took over.  No Division level supervision is left in the office except for the non-contract Chief Dispatcher.

No one is sure that the dates they have been given for actual relocation are firm dates.  There have been at least 4 different moving plans floated through the rumor mill - and not all of them were to Jacksonville.

Division supervision that was in place when I retired have either been promoted, gone back on their seniority or terminated.  Since EHH eliminated the Road Foreman of Engines position, it is not known what sort of procedure will be implemented for Engineers to get certified or to maintain their certification - as required by FRA Regulations.

New Employee Timetables have been published effective September 1, 2017.  The Timetables have been put out on a Sub Division basis.  Each Sub Division is a separate timetable.  There are no officers names listed - either Divisional or Sub Division.

EVERYONE says this is the most disorganized organization that they have EVER been a part of - these people have come from a variety of backgrounds to become train dispatchers - military, airlines, air traffic control and at least half a dozen other types of business.  They can detect with things are organized and when they aren't.  The supposition is that EHH has been too long without a adequte oxygen supply at periods of time since oxygen became a requirement for him and his mental abilities have suffered from progressive and repeated oxygen deprivation.

Glad I retired when I did!

It is really sad when a well-run machine has wooden shoes thrown into it by someone who cares ony for what he can get out of his action.

Yes, but what is really sad is how few people even know the back story of your footwear reference and its impact on the language.

Big Smile The best determination I have seen was a B.C. cartoon. B.C. was standing by a wheel that was spinning and had all the weather events shown, and the shill was going to toss a dart at the wheel.  I would guess that was the best there was at the time. Now the T.V.has different colored splotches and a spiel that might work (or not). I just look out the backdoor window ___seems  to work. No trains were harmed by this.

I hate to use this for "commercial" purposes, but if anyone regularly watches Jeopardy! on TV, today's the day that our daughter, (Dr.) Linda Shaver-Gleason, is one of the contestants.  Although this was filmed in April, they can't divulge what went on, so I have no idea whether she won.  But she says she had fun.

(This is my daughter who is suffering from cancer.  She's doing well at the moment, but, as we've found out in the past, things could go south in a hurry.)

As for me, I'm going to go east until it's time for the show locally.

This link will show this week's contestants and also give local times and channels in your zip code, although it doesn't seem to work in Safari, even though the "Submit" button shows an active link.  It does seem to work in IE whatever, though.

I see no problem whatsoever - especially considering all you've shared with us in the past.  I don't normally watch it, but may have to tune in...

Irma just a 'footnote' on the Hurricane Centers maps.  Jose looks like he will corkscrew himself offshore of the US.

Carl,

I do not see a problem. All of us who post here are on pins and needles wondering what the outom will be and wishing the best to Linda.

I have a woman friend who is a ten year survivor. It is my hope Linda beats the beast and lives a long and fruitful life.

This is the best an old man has to offer. Nobody ever said life was fair. Linda was dealt a bad hand but she has handled it with aplomb.

Having lost one close woman friend to breast cancer back in the seventies and knowing one who had good insurance and made the approprite choices ten years ago I can only hope Linda has those options and can find doctors who can rid her of that disease.

Pardon me for being a bit emotional but breast cancer has struck women I have known. The results were not what I wanted to deal with.\

Thoughts and prayers to you and Linda.

My Comments were intended to show ultimate respect. It was not cancer but an overdose of Prozac that removed the only woman I ever loved from my life. You are facing the loss of one of your progeny and I feel your pain in having to do so.

Here's an interesting surface winds depiction, global, if you drag things around.  You're right about Irma being "off the grid" now, as it were.  I guess the cable "news" outlets will have to find something else about which to obsess.

Balt,

If you want accuracy about winds aloft go to NOAA's aviation website.

Having been involved in aviation fo over thirty years I have learned to rely on their  product.

The 'general accuracy' of what that site shows is of more interest - especially with what appears to be world wide coverage.  Looked at the area North of Alutians - the Bearing Sea - WOW!
