William E. Loftus former President of the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) and one of its predecessors the American Short Line Association died today. Bill was 74. He died from complications following surgery for cancer.

Bill Loftus was a career government official having served 23 years with the Federal Railroad Administration prior to his nine year tenure with the ASLRRA. Subsequetly, he served as a senior advisor for Rail America.

Loftus will be remembered for his efforts in merging the American Short Line Association with the Regional Railroads of America to form ASLRRA in 1987 and for his effective efforts towards the formation of the Rail Industry Agreement between the short lines and Class 1 railroads.
