Why does the D in MDT as well as other refrigerator and insulated box car owners spell it as Despatch rather than Dispatch. Mariam Webster definition says it is a British spelling as opposed to the American spelling. Any other reasons? Just wondering.

I can't tell you specifically why they spell it that way, but I noticed that in the book "The American Railway" published around 1889, they spelled it with an "e", so it was apparently spelled that way in America back in the good old days. There were several other words spelled differently in that book.
