I can't give you any detailed advice, but if you look at a detailed Virginia road map you'll see Route 460 follows the Norfolk-Southern tracks VERY closely from Lynchburg to Petersburg. This was also the route followed by NS steam excursions back in the old days. A good road map perusal should give you some idea of overpasses and such where you can get your pictures.
Myself, I plan to be in Petersburg on Sunday when 611 comes to call. It's been a LONG time coming! Got things to do Saturday so I can't go then.
