Such a listing would also be greatly complicated unless a specific date was defined first. Just look at all the roads that got wrapped into the Pennsy in the 1800s and early 1900s. They all became one name. Then there was CR and father on CSX and N&W -- plus all the spin offs like the Nittany & Bald Eagle.

So, if you're going to do this marathon, I'd suggest picking a date, or broadly allowing any road name no matter when they existed. Wow, this reminds me of the Forest Gump walk across the country and back several times.

It would be an amazing graphical chart on a huge wall. It would be quite of bit of industrial archeology to capture and preserve.

I've got some Railway Guides from the 50s and there are over 600 roads in these (Canada, Mexico, US, and Cuba).

Given that most of the roads in the rest of the world are government owned (and fewer per country), the North American number of 600 might be at least half of the world total. Of course there are/were some really neat privately owned mountain passenger roads in places like Switzerland.
