Below is what K.P. saw the other day on his computer about an above post by Semper Vaporo (in this thread).

Anybody have any thoughts?

This seems to work with WORD now, but is only a test.

For those interested, the more or less magical words were found, and the computer seems (“seems”) to be purring right now..

Some post buttons are disappearing again, but that can be dealt with another time.

Oh, no!  The wicked pop-ups are back!

After reading Semper Vaporo’s enlightening, lengthy post involving Internet Explorer’s “wheel” thing … His findings was tried and tinkered with, and it for all practical purposes basically worked.

But, here is the most striking thing that resulted:  K.P. had been having severe trouble with pop-ups and impossible to deal with warnings and messages, so troublesome the computer would invariably have to be turned off and restarted.  After much websites testing, the culprit was narrowed down to the trainsmag.com website.  The problem even altered a post of a well-known “Sunset Route Two-Tracking Updates” thread contributor, INSERTING girlie photos in his post.  Those girlie photo were NOT of the overly explicit type, but nevertheless totally inappropriate for any Kalmbach forum.

In trying Semper Vaporo’s Internet Explorer “Wheel” findings, suddenly NO wicked, impossible pop-ups!  Even the girlie photos were gone.

So, K.P. concluded the trainsmag.com website was somehow infected with some problem and was making everything not work property, and everyone affected were cursing Internet Explorer as the culprit, when in reality the problem seemed to be coming from the trainsmag.com website itself!  Semper Vaporo’s efforts has enlightened us all, and if we all branch out from there and apply his findings (even though the scope of the problems seem to not have been fully uncovered yet), the chronic bugs at this website might be able to be put behind us, and the trainsman.com website could very well become the premiere website of super well running forums and railroad knowledge exchange.

-------

If this got posted, the test involving branches of the wheel worked.

In Internet Explorer, what works with WORD …

With Tools (Alt+X, that spoke wheel thing) … Safety … Delete Browsing History …

After check marking “Temporary Internet files and website files” and NO OTHERS checked, then “Delete” …

… the full editing buttons show themselves on editing screen on the SECOND post.

Let’s try this again … with pasting from WORD,

Ah, copying WORD now works!  Fantastic!

The second time around some buttons disappeared again … Then I remembered that ‘Compatibility Mode’ had to be functioning.

Semper Vaporo saved the day!  SORT OF … Now the buttons have disappeared again while IN ‘Compatibility Mode.’  Hmmm.

Hey, Sempor Vaporo!  Have I got ANOTHER story to tell you related to your “:16” post earlier today, October 30, 2014!  But, hang in there; I’ve got to compose and say it the right way, which may take a while.  But, when you hear it you might halfway freak out at what has been happening on this end

GOOD GRAVY!  There were two files in there after clearing them... then I opened this edit box to post this and now there are 95 files in it!  This may take a while to see which one does what!

If you click the Gear icon in the upper right and select "Safety >" and then select "Delete Browsing History" (or type "Ctrl-Shift-Del") you will get a dialog box with a lot of checkboxes.

The top one is usually checked by default and it says that you want to "Preserve Favorites Website Data" when deleting what the other checkboxes indicate.

I unchecked all but the 1st one and then tried each of the others one at a time, deleting what each particular one did.  None of them helped.

So I unchecked the 1st one so that it WOULD delete the Favorites Website data (note, it deletes only DATA associated with what is in your Favorites list, not the Favorites list!) and then I tried deleting only "Temporary Internet files and Website files" and then when I opened this posting's edit box the buttons were back.

Whatever it is that kills the buttons is in one of the files in the Temporary folder.

Note: I left the one that deletes "Cookies" unchecked.

So far, I have not noticed any problems with my PC, but I usually clear all that stuff every day using CCleaner.  But I always have to log-in to every website that I visit because I always log-out when I am done for the day, anyway.

Just a CAVEAT... If you usually stay logged-into some websites (Trains dot com, or your e-mail, etc.) then the above action of clearing ALL Website files might cause you to have to remember what your ID and Password was on all those sites!

I am going to take a look at the Temporary Internet files directory to see what is in there now and what gets deleted by the above and what gets put back when opening the edit box to see if I can figure out which file in particular it is... but don't hold yer breath that I might come up with something worthwhile! Embarrassed

With IE11 the buttons show one time when switching into or out of compatibility mode and then they disappear for the next time.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!

Okay, I ran "CCleaner" to clear my cookies and temporary files (and a bunch of other stuff!) and now I see the buttons again.

Well... at least the dog is getting plenty of publicity!

Nope, that does NOT work (I guess as before).  The important buttons are missing the second time around!

Take care,

K.P.

Semper Vaporo (10-30):

I'm pretty sure Compatibility Mode was on, but let me try that (possibly again) ...

Test ...

How long has it been since somebody first mentioned the page number linkd messed up when on a thread's last page? They once upon a time said something like "-1 -2 3 4 5" on a multi page thread. On this one now they say "<<First << 0 1 2 3 4 5" when I think they should say "1 2 3 4 5 6", since this thread now has 6 pages.

At least they seem to take me to the correct pages, which at one time I reported that they sometimes took me to the wrong page.

K.P.:  Just a question... Is your browser (IE) set to Complatibility Mode?  I am not sure if that is necessary with the new site software, but mine is set for Trains dot com to be in Compatibility Mode and I see the picture insert buttons.

K.P.'s photo

And the insert photo function works!  (At least I see it as I compose this.)

Second IE post:  Still screws up!  NO picture insertion buttons.

NO BUTTONS for photos ... Maybe what appears as a link will work.  Try it and see, though forum users would NOT like such.

Another Test … (Continued)

If you see this, WORD to plain text editor to Firefox to clipboard via CTRL+V and NOT via the Paste button worked!

Cumbersome, but at least it NOW works!

The above two K.P. posts were from Internet Explorer … This post was while in Firebox … It worked at first, but went bad.  Hmmm.  Then it was redone, which worked.  Figure that one out ...

Not even going to try ..... Laugh Laugh Laugh Laugh

It is interesting that the page number button fixes are going sideways. Now I don't see negative numbers, but zeros are there sometimes and the grey 'active' page indicator is inconsistent.

NOTE TO MODS - It would be a lot more constructive if we 'testers' knew WHEN changes were or will be applied so we can try to compare before and after. The continuing lack of notices perpetuates the view of the rest of the Kalmbach staff as, er, unprofessional. TIA!

HOW MANY GUESSES DO YOU NEED?

About my new inability to post efficietly now... Since my computer was in a state (condition) where it could NOT be altered in any way, and Mozella Firefox worked at the TRAINS Magazine website the first post test, but did NOT later, where-o-where could the problem possibly have come from?
