Wise DVD Choices
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, October 28, 2004 10:02 PM
So far I only have "America's Railroads" - Volumes I,II,III of the Milwaukee Rd, and "Pittsburgh Mainlines" - I love this one on home theater. The sound is crystal clear, and Kudos to the videographer! I want to expand my library a thousandfold. I would like to see input from everyone who have DVD or VHS collections to inform me as to what's excellent, what's good, and what to stay away from. Thank you.

Sure![:)]

Madacy Records' "American Steam" series is terrific. Awesome scenes of late steam, plus the 3 DVD set includes trivia games, info on streamlined trains, railroads, and robbers. Madacy doesn't have a website, so check out:

Anything from Pentrex is great. Look at their selection at http://www.pentrex.com/[tup]

The first of Marathon Music and Video's America's Railroads (which you have) is excellent, but, IMO, the second is horrible. A large chunk of the footage has no sound or narration....period. Just mute, washed-out shots of trains with annoying, stereotypical blues/country music. [zzz] But if that's the kind of thing you like, see: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000DIZTV/qid%3D1099228555/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/102-0525676-8931314
(By the way, the review is mine.)

Brentwood Home Video's "Steam Trains" 5 DVD set is outstanding. The only problem is that many of the shows share lots of footage. More details at:

I have not experienced any DVD's regarding railroad action recordings...I imagine the sound would be terrific in surround sound, etc....Is it worth purchasing a few just to experience the duplication of sound, etc.....I do have a home theater set up.
