Looks like they were on display over the weekend ..

http://railpictures.net/photo/578912/

They were on display just a few minutes ago, heading west to Global 3 (probably an IG2G2 turnaround).

Is it me or does it seem like UP is trying some different things at G3?  This train went down track 1 to CPY078 and then evidently backed into the yard eastbound.  Has BNSF been complaining about UP trains blocking the diamond when entering westbound, having to stop for periods of time to handle switches/derails?

Anybody have any idea what's up with the eastbound UP on Track 2 currently?  He's been doing alot of sloooow back and forth across the diamonds.

EDIT:  He just cleared out, consist was nearly 100% boxes and reefers.  Maybe picking up some reefers from siding at Global 3?

The Rio Grande and 2002 Olympics unit just came by!

And they're ping-ponging east about 5 pm Central time Wednesday.

Man, I hope UP is getting more than 120 miles a day out of these units...

Then is Global 2 that yard on the far south side of Chicago (not sure which suburb, maybe Dolton)?

Global 2 is located at Proviso Yard in the Maywood/Elmhurst area. Kind of on the south side of the yard.

I get confused by the various Globals.  Rochelle is Global 3 and Joliet is Global 4.  However is the old "Hawks Nest" on Chicago's west side from CNW days Global 1?  Then is Global 2 that yard on the far south side of Chicago (not sure which suburb, maybe Dolton)?

Today the Rio Grande heritage unit was leading on a transfer.

That engine combination is showing up daily; they must be using it as a shuttle between Global (3?) and other locations in the Chicago area.  For some reason, regardless of being eastbound or westbound the lead engine is always the Olympic unit.

This pair just  passed (10:48) w/b with the typical short consist. The last few weeks it seems to have lots of "baretables".

From listening to the scanner feed I believe this job is IG2G3 s transfer from Global 2 to Global 3. Usually the coun terpart, IG3G2, goes back east within a couple of hours; I imagine this is a turn job.

I think, given the decent weather we've had, we've probably seen the extent of the building across the way being torn down that we ever will.

My guess is that further demo would require UP and BNSF flaggers and that may have not been budgeted.

Interesting and busy morning on the cam.  The Torch/DRGW units passed going into G3 again, then a bit later what looked like an International Harvester sprint train went by eastbound with one unit and about 25-35 cars of combines and parts, nothing else.

BNSF very busy as well.

Creative use of the remainder?  I think it wouldn't take much to make it my favorite Meijer store in the whole world, for example!  Or Target.  And one time, back when the instigator of the whole railfan park was mayor or chief planner, he said something about a restaurant in there, with windows overlooking the action.

That power car was once a dynamometer car.  It's fairly new to the business fleet, in the sense that I remember seeing it before it was converted.

That thing behind the power is a generator car; the raised portion of the body houses the radiators

I wondered about that. It seemed like an awful lot of cooling capacity for test equipment, especially in a digital age. Yet, the Rocky Mountaineer tourist train normally has a much bigger consist, and they house their HEP in a regular height, from what appears outside, to be a regular baggage car. At least when I rode it in the spring of 1999.

Of course, UP has to deal with summer time temperatures in the American west.

That thing behind the power is a generator car; the raised portion of the body houses the radiators.  This assures that virtually any locomotive on UP can move the business cars and the lights will stay on.  I don't think UP's fleet of E9s is up to moving much of anything at the moment.

I don't know what UP has numbered or named this creature, but it can't hold a candle to what CNW did when it had its fleet of passenger cars (decimated, picked over, and sold off by UP).  Along with the fancy F7s that powered the trains (at very nice speeds, if necessary--none of this poking along at 79!), they had an F7B that housed a generator, named Oak Creek.  The name fit in with many of the geographic names on the business cars, but somebody pulled a fast one.  The power car was named for Oak Creek, Wisconsin, site of a good-sized power plant that has remained a steady CNW and UP customer for at least 45 years!  Having picked up empties from Oak Creek myself, I appreciated what they did there...

Some interesting movements at the diamond today.

At 1400 CDT another all CSX powered WB oil train cleared the diamond with what I presume was the same CP Rail buffer car I reported on a few days ago, now at the end of the train returning home.

Earlier, according to Junior Yardmaster, an EB UP passenger train cleared the diamond at 1323. I do not know what was going on there. The coach right behind the unit had a raised end like a dome on the lead end. But there was no glass, just ventilator grills on the side. I guessing it was some kind of loco test car. Then there were an assortment of various coaches including a dome car, and an open observation car with the open end leading. Finally, a theatre style track inspection car brought up the rear. I'm guessing the whole thing was more for technical personnel as opposed to moving Exec's over the system.

As I was typing this the UP Olympic engine passed on the head of a EB intermodal.

he had to have been standing at trackside on the northwestern side of the crossings

I suspect he is standing at or near the street crossing of 1st ave and the UP. The photo has some telephoto appearance (the curve is pronounced) and thats why I place him that far West. Great shot. Thanks for the post.

Now a question. When looking at the Rochelle Google Map view, I see the BNSF spur that runs West along the UP has a connection to the UP, leads into Del Monte Foods, and a six track "yard" or storage area West of Del Monte. Can anyone tell me what those tracks are/were for? Car storage for Del Monte?

Nice photo on RP showing the other UP Signal Bridge.

http://railpictures.net/photo/577451/

I'll say it's a "nice photo"!  Kudos to the photographer.

I was going to question where this was taken but unless the photographer is lying in the info on RP, he had to have been standing at trackside on the northwestern side of the crossings, looking to the east.  These are the only crossings in Rochelle and the only UP curve within miles.  There must be a house just outside the picture to the right.

Great job of framing (or cropping?)!

Given that most spiders live for about a year (according to a post on Yahoo Answers), we are probably seeing at least the second and maybe the third generation of resident spiders.  And even if we get rid of this one, another would probably move in pretty quickly.  What we need is a wasp but which one? I understand they are very particular, each wasp species preying on only one kind of spider. Confused
