BNSF probably has the best shot, UP doesn't stand a chance.

CN might this year because of the BC Rail take-over and the BLE group.

I'd say BNSF or NS (NS may have the worse management, but they make money!).

I would like to say my favorit railroad CSX will be the best but I don' think their going to get enough votes, they'll get mine though !!! lol. I think BNSF is going to get the votes. They have increased rail traffic and invested in huge amounts of infrastructure this year. On the other hand their major competitor UP decreased their traffic.

It'd almost have to be either of the western railroads (BNSF has its derailments, too); they're the ones that are ordering locomotives hand-over-fist, and building an appreciable amount of new track to handle increases in business.

Oh, and Sarah, UP may have turned away business, but that doesn't mean they have less now than they had before. According to the propaganda I receive, UP carloadings have been at record levels since late September.

All four of the class Is listed at top make money. Show me where the other three don't.

This is rather a silly exercise, seeing as no criteria are listed. Operating ratio, revenue, net profit, ton-miles, traffic growth -- what are you basing this on?

How about number of cars hauled to number of cars derailed percentage? or Tons hauled to ton's lost? or Number of beers drunk by the engineers and conductors after work?

OK, since you know what makes it go, you tell us. What criteria do you propose??

None of em! They all try, but it's like the old joke...four contestants show up for a beauty contest, but the judges gave the winner second place.

Ya mabe now the UP can now start shipping more grain now that the harvest season is here.
also.......
I said 4 Railroads because Im not including CN/CP because the CNCP are NOT American Railroads. I am also sorry that I did not include others like KCS,and so on,I thought only the RR's with the MOST mileage plain and simple.
I mean we ARE Railfans are we?

All I have to say is CSX is its own worst enemy. I was at Clearing Yard yesterday in Chicago and I had to wait again on UP track warrants and CSX bulletins for over an hour. The train I was assigned to, Q597 runs every day at the same time!!!!! Why is it that the Chicago Operations Center cannot get this through their heads??? That paperwork should be waiting for me when I arrive, but that would just make sense now and we couldn't have that! [banghead][censored]

I would judge based on the following:

A. On time delivery---the customer is king.

B. Operating ratio and Price/earnings ratio---got to keep Wall Street happy

C. Safety/man hours worked vs.injury ratio---everything needs to be done with this in mind

D. Locomotive availability and mean time between failures---keep tabs on the mechanical dept.

E. Average train speed, dwell time in yards, and recrew ratio---keep tabs on the operating dept.

F. Track quality, # of slow orders, and derailments attributed to track---keep tabs of the MOW dept.

G. Goodwill and employee morale---keep tabs of management (mainly)

A, B, and C would be the heaviest weighted of the criteria--if these are good the others probably fall into place. The railroad leading in two of these top three criteria would be my railroad of the year. In case of three way tie, use the other four as the tie breaker.

I haven't seen the current numbers of the four railroads mentioned, but my hunch is that it is a two-way race between BNSF and NS.

you know the thread was cute and funny until you posted such a rude and offensive, not to mention wrong, post.

I still say the criteris to determine the best Class I is to find the one with the highest Beers drunk to conductor/engineer ratio.
