Interesting story and I wonder if there are any old 4-4-0 parts still laying around the crash site.

Trains magazine, back in the 1970s, had a great article about that staged collision.  As I recall, the railroad’s mechanical experts assured management that the boilers would not explode during the crash. Yet one did explode and gave the crowd the full experience of train wreck horror instead of just the symbolism of an enactment that they had bargained for. 

I would expect iron fragments to be buried there today since they were widely disbursed after landing from the explosion.

   Two things struck me:

    The railroad thought it would be favorable attention.

    It turned out to be favorable attention.
