Can anyone of you please let me know what Trains editor David P Morgan said in "News & Editorial Comment" in the June 1976 issue about Conrail? Kevin P Keefe, later Trains editor, said in the Sept 1998 issue that Morgan questioned about the Conrail inception whether it was "April Fool's Day or St. Crispin's Day." A scan and e-mail attachment of that Trains page would graciously help. Blessings, Denny
It's not just one page -- it runs in slugs from p.3 to p.8. It basically discusses the extraordinary origins of 'Big Conrail', and how other railroads were concerned that Conrail would prove a 'nose in the door' for Government control and ownership. If someone from Kalmbach gives permission, I can provide the text.
The St. Crispin's day (of course a reference to Henry V part 2) was made by Ed Jordan at the "Announcing Conrail' meeting at the (post-Legionnaire's Disease) Bellevue Stratford. (Morgan points out Jordan got the date wrong; it's October 25th.) The import was that the Conrail team expected, against long odds, to make a success of their efforts.
And I think it's fair to say that they did.
October 25, 1974 (St. Crispin's Day) Consolidated Rail Corporation incorporated in Delaware.
