i am trying to locate on my 1997 SPV great lakes west atlas where the "new" mineral range rr runs. i know the location is given as going from winthrop junction southward to explosives maker and srcapyard, but dont see either pluto or winthrop junction on my atlas. how will that stretch connect with the 12 miles of ex lake superior & ishpeming track it has picked up?
Go to:
http://www.mytopo.com/maps/
Then type "Ishpeming, MI" into the [Enter a location...] box.
Find the new LS&I yard west of town (new features are shown in purple).
Look about a mile south, and you will see Winthrop Junction.
The (New) Mineral Range is the former C&NW line to the south thru National Mine.
The 12 miles of LS&I that the new RR has picked up is the line west of the Ishpeming yard. That line connects with the former Soo Line just north of Humboldt Mine. About 2 miles of rail will be re-installed from there to the old Humboldt mill, which is being refurbished for a Nickel mine project mill. The mine is about 20 miles north, and the ore will be hauled in by truck, and the concentrate will be hauled out by rail to a Canada smelter.
A note on SPV atlas's. On the trainorders.com board last week about April 20. It was announced that SPV will not print any new editions. If one needs to complete a collection now is the time. The Pacific Northwest Volume seems to be sold out.
