NS on "Horseshoe"

With the old Southern now at the head of Norfork Southern and running on Horseshoe Curve, it would appear that the Standard Railroad of the World was really the Southern. Comments?

Last time I looked it was NORFOLK Southern.As far as the P company,depends on what you call standard.This was no other railroad like before or since.Now,I am sure if the thought of buying the southern,ever cross the minds of the PRR management,I am sure they would have done it.

The PRR couldn't stay afloat even with NYC, let alone buy Southern. As for Southern being the predominant road in the NS stable I read this in one of the train magazines, but I forgot which one.

If you believe every thing you read I have a house in Ohio with a view of the Pacific ocean I would love to sell you! Southern Ry was not all that hot. The only reason they wanted the N&W was to keep the like of Chessie from getting it or even the CSX merger.This was true when the C&O bought 51% of the B&O.You see the PRR and NYC was talking about including the B&O in the Penn-Central deal.Did you know at one time the thought cross the C&Os mind to get the Southern?What stop that was the PRR/NYC talks.Also with the N&W,Wabash NKP merger thought turn to the Southern way back in the 60s! Have you ever thought of the Southern where it would be today if the Chessie or CSX got the N&W? Or if the CSX got the Southern where N&W would be? As far as the PRR getting the Southern it would have been better for them then the bankrupt NYC.BTW the C&O spent millions on up grading the B&O as the B&O was also bankrupt and in bad shape.As far as the Southern it to was in dire strights before the merger.The N&W has always been a money maker even when other railroads was in dire streights.
