Hi everyone.

Am vacationing in New Buffalo, MI. Had a few inquiries.

Who originally owned the line that Amtrak now operates over?

Who Owned the line that CSX now operates over?

Do any Amtrak trains run over CSX's Line?

How many freights/trains in general traverse CSX in New Buffalo per day?

Thanks!

-Justin

I can assist in a couple of your questions.

There are two Amtrak lines thru New Buffalo.  One is owned by Amtrak and is the ex Michigan Central line which ran frm Chicago to Detroit and thru Ontario to Buffalo.  NS runs a local out of Burns Harbor, In. up the line (not sure how far).  This line continues west thru Michigan City and connects with the NS line at Porter.  There is an interesting swing bridge at Michigan City (Trail Creek) and old coal tower a couple miles east of the bridge.  If you have access to a car, take US 12 towards City.

The CSX line sees a daily Grand Rapids - Chicago pair of Amtrakers plus a pair of freights (Q326/327).  I just heard Q327 on the NS scanner (7pm).  Like the Amtrak line, the CSX line connects at Porter with the NS mainline, just east of the Amtrak junction (about 200yards).  In addition, CSX runs a coal train up that line, usually with BNSF power.  Thus, you have about 6 trains daily.  The CSX line was originally the Pere Marquette line from Chicago to Detroit, but was via Grand Rapids and more lengthy that the Michigan Central.  In addition, there was a branch line which ran south thru LaPorte, Wellsboro and ended at Lacrosse, In.  This line has been pulled, except Wellsboro to Lacrosse, which is now the Chesapeake and Indiana.

You should go to the museum on the CSX line out by I94.  You can thus legally poke around the grounds and perhaps see a train.  Amtrak runs on regular schedules for both lines and you can access online.  There is also a huge coal tower on the CSX near the museum.

Enjoy the Labor Day weekend.  If you are 21, go to Caseys for dinner.  It is our favorite restaurant/bar in New Buffalo.  Pickup a burger at Redimacks.
