Please vote for your favorite image in the Trackside with Trains.com online photo contest. The topic for Volume 189 is Tunnels:

Also, let us know what you think of the photos.

Is the topic for #190 going to be "Trains and newborn babies?"

What are you doing back already?

My vote went to Alex Mayes, for nostalgia's sake.  This was one of the first tunnels I ever traveled through by train, and the soon-to disappear C&O cantilever signal post makes it even more distinctive.

(I liked the Tom Nanos shot, too, and it was a tough choice!)

Tom's got my vote.  Neat composition.

Tom's.  Just a good picture.   But where are the great ones?  Hoosac, those through the NJ Palasades or the Contental Divide? Historic ones like Belden Hill, Harpers Ferry, Chicago Underground, The Spiral, and the like?  Subways and light rail (trolley cars!) in suburbia and inner city?  More tunnel and less train was what I was looking for in this catagory and Tom's had it.

RIDEWITHMEHENRY is the name for our almost monthly day of riding trains and transit in either the NYCity or Philadelphia areas including all commuter lines, Amtrak, subways, light rail and trolleys, bus and ferries when warranted. No fees, just let us know you want to join the ride and pay your fares. Ask to be on our email list or find us on FB as RIDEWITHMEHENRY (all caps) to get descriptions of each outing.

Yes, I agree with the majority....It's Tom Lanos' photo.  Unique, and I'd say the degree of difficulity was right up there.

I like the theme of Tunnels.

And they are all nice photos.  Just like Tom's better, and what it took to get it.  Very good timing.

Mike Rogue got my vote. Isn't there supposed to be train with the tunnel..laughs. So yeah a classic shot of SP power and a tunnel!

I agree with Thunderhands.  Tunnels are made for the trains so I feel there should be a train.  I too voted for Mike Roque.  Great clear shot of both the tunnel and train.

I voted for Alex Mayes as his composition had all the elements I like in a Trains competition photograph. It had a good shot of the tunnel as well as a locomotive and train emerging from the tunnel entrance with ‘the light at the end of the tunnel’ in view. The single and mile post also added to the appeal.

Tom’s was very good, but like others, I like a train or locomotive in the picture.  I thought that Brent A. Harrison's photo should get a prize for the worst tunnel facade in the world – probably J

Martin.

I loved the tunnel in Brent's photo.

Looks almost Steam Punkish.  Very cool.

It's been fun.  But it isn't much fun anymore.   Signing off for now.

Tom Nanos as it was completely different. The others are all expected shots. And after voting found Tom will probably win this by a landslide Big Smile

I think the thing that made it stand out more was the different construction material used in that particular tunnel and hence the colour it added. The light from above was a bonus.

Where I come from (New Zealand) this does not exist. Additionally, some that are close (or fairly close) to the surface have been "daylighted" so the tunnel is no more.

If I had to pick one of the others over Toms, tough choice.
