There is already homework in school.

Today's "word of the day" in my literature class was pathos. Everyone in the class had to look up the definition of pathos, and a word that means the opposite of pathos.

The definition was easy enoughto find: The quality of something experienced or observed which arouses feelings of pity, sorrow, sympathy, or compassion.

The opposite was more difficult. My Mom and I did find a very good opposite, and I believe that the teacher will be happy with it.

To make this about trains, I will use pathos in a sentence about trains: I feel pathos for anyone who waits by the train track for an hour, and doesn't see a single train. I feel pathos when I don't see a train after waiting for an hour or more. Trust me, I've felt pathos about trains many times.

If you would like, you can try to find the opposite of pathos that my Mom and I found. If nobody has found it by Saturday evening, I'll reveal the antonym that we found.

I'm just trying to make this a bit fun, so don't go way out your way to find the opposite, just if you'd like to see if you can find it, that's great. Maybe somebody will find an even better antonym.

Hi Willy,

sorry to hear that you already have homework.

How about being able to see 6 trians per hour and if your real lucky, one might be a steam engine.

I am a person with a very active inner child. This is why my wife loves me so. Willoughby, Ohio - the home of the CP & E RR. OTTS Founder www.spankybird.shutterfly.com

Nobody figured out the word we came up with.

The antonym for pathos that we came up with is... antipathy: A strong or deep rooted dis-like, or an aversion.

Hey Willy,

Don't worry about the homework, you'll get over it after a while, I'm a sophmore in high school, you'll get used to it after a while. I have had my share, believe me [:)]. Dave [:D]

The word is Encourgement. Find an encouraging word, to suggest an uplifting thought. Have I not commanded thee, be strong, and of a good courage, for the Lord Thy God hath commanded thee, whither soever thou go'est. (Joshua, Chapter one, King James Version). The only place where success is used. The book of proverbs says, ...and God giveth to the prudent the knowledge of witty inventions!. Don't worry, be happy! ACJ

I am not quite sure if this is the word you are looking for; but, "bathos," which means a false or fake pathos, is probably pretty close.

e.g.

Pathos: I felt the pathos of all rail fans when Norfolk Southern retired the 611.

Bathos: The bathos of insurance companies was evident when they indicated that the environment that restricts steam excursions hurts them as much as steam fans.

Hope this helps.
