Train Hopping
Posted by Doc Murdock on Thursday, May 17, 2012 10:54 AM

I've known a guy out of Winnipeg, Manitoba whose main methods of getting around Canada is hopping grain trains. He take photographs of his "adventures", one of which he was leaning over, between two grain hoppers, to take a picture of the coupling. The train was in motion, going fast.

I emailed him saying it was insane to do such a thing and if he fell, how would his friends and family would feel about him dying from a unnecessary death. I didn't get a  reply but I now notice on one of his websites that he now doesn't recommend hopping trains.

A few year ago he said I should go trainhopping with him. I said no as it was too dangerous to do so and I had legal ways of getting from Point A to Point B.

What are the penalties or fines for hopping frieghts these days?

In order to engage in train-hopping, you first have to engage in trespassing.  The fines and other consequences for that are severe enough.

But Doc, I should warn you that the subject of train-hopping or other aspects of the hobo lifestyle are off limits on the Forum.

Thanks for the information. I didn't realize train hopping was off limits on the forums.
