A Nathans Hot dog tastes to me like they ground up a bunch of Shoe Leather beat it to a pulp and then called it a Hot Dog. Sorry but if you want a Great Hot Dog come to Chicago and eat one from Demons or find a Prtillos in the area or if you want something differant catch the race at Marthinsville VA and get one there. Just prepare to wait 2 hours in line for the ones at the race as they are that popular.
blue streak 1 ROAR: Sorry but that is not quite correct. I know several locations where there are connections to standard guage subways from regular RRs. These connections are used for all the regular initial construction and regular ROW maintenance . Each facility will have a special loco built for its clearances and will either use special clearance cars or regular RR ballast, welded rail, cross ties , switches, etc.

NYCT equipment is not built to FRA standards and may not mix with Railroad equipment. Obviously connections are needed to move equipment in and out, although new NYCT cars are delivered by truck, and retired equipment leaves via barge, so go figure. I understand PATH has an exemption. I do not know if other subway equipment meets FRA crash worthiness standards nor how they deal with FRA rules.
Richmond Hill is still part of the LIRR, but is operated by the New York and Atlantic Railroad which handles all freight on the LIRR.
Broadway Lion:
Interesting perspectives!
Nice job on the photos. For myself I enjoyed the trip back to NYC.
Are the Richmond Hill Yard and Shops still used by LIRR?
[I remember going back there, and trying to wiggle a 53' trailer full of M-1 car seats into their warehouse/office area for morning deliveries. If the firemen at the Station right next to the driveway had not helped, I'd never made it.]
BroadwayLion LIRR has tracks here too, but they do not physically connect with the NYCT tracks. Federal law prohibits heavy railroad equipment from accessing NYCT tracks which are exempt. ROAR

Coney Island, Brooklyn.
Home of the (D) (Q) (N) and (F) trains, also of the best hotdogs in the world.
I want to build an interpretation of that train shed on my layout.
It's been a long time since I was in NYC Metro area but I do have memories of these old lines running all over the city; above & below. As a kid, it was hard for me to understand just how complex the system was but was sure cool to watch them come and go to who knows where!
Smith-9th Street, Brooklyn. Here the IND rides on an elevated structure, the only one built by the IND, and it goes right over the top of these buildings. Further west there are four story buildings under the tracks. In this shot you can see a holding track moving to a lower level which simply ends a few feet west of this photo. It is a matter of speculation as to why this pocket was built since trains to and from Manhattan cannot access it, and besides it is too short(?) to hold a full 600' train. It may have been intended to be used as a layup track fro the Staten Island line that was never built.
Actually, that part of the system used to have twice as many tracks some of which once upon a time went across the Queens Bridge. Now the Flushing line makes a sharp left turn into the Steinway Tunnel, while the BMT (shown) makes a jog left into the 60th Street Tunnel. The buildings on the left are both railroad buildings constructed on the right of way for whatever purposes they required.
City bound trains are on the lower level, Queens bound trains are on the upper level.
You can tell from that shot that this system was put into place many a year ago to work it's way around existing buildings...
