ROAR: Sorry but that is not quite correct. I know several locations where there are connections to standard guage subways from regular RRs.
1. Marta Atlanta -- located in Avondale thru east side maintenance facility.
2. Chicago ----- some of our Chicago friends can list.
3. Portland ----- Saw a connection in Beaverton at one time
4. Miami ---------- At one time somewhere near end of NW leg to FEC
5. Baltimore ----- inactive NS connection to light rail north of downtown.
6. St. Louis ---- Connection to light rail near old NKP station.
7. PATH ---------- can't remember but in NJ
8. Other posters can fill in.
These connections are used for all the regular initial construction and regular ROW maintenance . Each facility will have a special loco built for its clearances and will either use special clearance cars or regular RR ballast, welded rail, cross ties , switches, etc.

Interesting perspectives!
Nice job on the photos. For myself I enjoyed the trip back to NYC.
Are the Richmond Hill Yard and Shops still used by LIRR?
[I remember going back there, and trying to wiggle a 53' trailer full of M-1 car seats into their warehouse/office area for morning deliveries. If the firemen at the Station right next to the driveway had not helped, I'd never made it.]
Richmond Hill is still part of the LIRR, but is operated by the New York and Atlantic Railroad which handles all freight on the LIRR.

NYCT equipment is not built to FRA standards and may not mix with Railroad equipment. Obviously connections are needed to move equipment in and out, although new NYCT cars are delivered by truck, and retired equipment leaves via barge, so go figure. I understand PATH has an exemption. I do not know if other subway equipment meets FRA crash worthiness standards nor how they deal with FRA rules.

A Nathans Hot dog tastes to me like they ground up a bunch of Shoe Leather beat it to a pulp and then called it a Hot Dog. Sorry but if you want a Great Hot Dog come to Chicago and eat one from Demons or find a Prtillos in the area or if you want something differant catch the race at Marthinsville VA and get one there. Just prepare to wait 2 hours in line for the ones at the race as they are that popular.
