Chicago, Illinois & Midland steam rebuild
Posted by gabe on Friday, August 20, 2004 9:08 AM
Between 6-8 years ago, I seem to remember that people were rebuilding a Chicago Illinois and Midland steam locomotive in Taylorville Illinois. In one of my Illinois sojourns I remember seeing a tender outside the old Pawnee Railroad round house. Does anyone know if they are still doing the rebuild, if the project is stalled or what?

Does anyone know how this group can be contacted? I would like to be able to help in anyway possible, if at all possible.

Thanks,

Gabe

I don't know anything about it but this is a worthy endeavor. [:)]

Hopefully bringing this thread back to daylight might yield some new posts. [;)]

Are you SURE it was a C&IM steamer? From everything I've read, the ONLY existing C&IM steamer is 501 at the St Louis Museum of Transportation.

The Locomotive is a Frisco 2-8-2. The restoration has lost some steam but its still down there and dissasembled. The 501 is the only C&IM steamer still around. The Frisco 2-8-2 has been the subject of a few restoration attempts in the past but nothing has come about this most recent one in the past few years. Long live the Rock!!!

Oh, the bitter sweet agony! I post this topict, thought it was dead, and then like a pheonix out of the ashes, it resurects itself (thanks jhhtrainsplanes). When I heard about the restoration project, I somehow assumed it was the 501. I can't think of a locomotive I would more like to see restored.

I hope things go well with the Frisco 2-8-2; but it just wont be the same. Thanks for the info RI4310.
