Click for larger (smaller) view?
Posted by kolechovski on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 12:20 PM

Does anyone else have this problem?  When clicking any picture on the site to expand it, instead of it usually working as it did, when this new format started being used roughly a few months ago, often, a very small window will open up with the picture in it.  I usually have to click a picture multiple times before it correctly expands.  Also, no longer will clicking anyhwre on the picture return it to normal size.  instead, now you must always click the X in the LOWER righthand corner (why is it there?).  Does anyone else have the issues with pictures failing to expand correctly, or just hate the new format for expanded pics?

I run Mozilla-Firefox, and to enlarge print.   I put the cursor on the area to be enlarged,

and then depress the (ctrl) key and at the same time I depress the key with the PLUS& Equal (+=) key til the text or picture reaches the sze I need it.  [usually about three times give me a size I can view]  My 2 Cents

Have found just holding down ctrl  and the the + key or - key to get expansion.  That actually works on any thing displayed on the screen. Screen goes up or down 25% expansion at a time. Have gone to 700% of normal to 10%. Quite a range

Er, I meant when you click on any reduced-size picture present on the forums or news articles, it then shows a larger nested window that shows that picture at full size.  It used to be that clicking anywhere within the larger picture window would then make it disappear, returning you right back to what you were viewing, and it was fast-loading.  About a couple months ago, there was some change to the forums where clicking on any reduced-size picture would load a slightly different type of nested window.  It is slower to load, and it often fails to expand to the correct size of the picture.  It also can't be closed, except by click an X that is present in the lower-right corner of the picture.  I should try to get a screenshot the next time and show you if you still don't experience this.  I thought it was a change to the site, although it could have been some auto-update to Microsoft Winblows 7.  This is running IE version 8.

EDIT-here, I grabbed an example.  In the first is how the whole page normally looks.  The second shows what loads after a failed attempt to blow up the featured picture.  The third shot shows a correctly blown-up attempt.

I'm still not certain I understand this issue, can you point me to a post where you are having this issue so I can see if I understand your issue better...

I mean scroll up a couple posts to where I have linkd in 3 pics at the bottom.  The first is how a page with a shrunken pic normally appears, the second shows one of the examples of what happens when clicking on the small picture fails to blow it up correctly, and the third shows what appears when the thumbnail has been blown up correctly.  The second picture is the error, and I am wondering why I am often getting it, and why sometimes it will work okay when retried.

When I want to view an image (such as in the Trackside photo contest), I must click within the image; when i do so, I get a very small applet box that is so tiny, none of the image can be seen--just a tiny box with scroll bars on the right side and bottom. If I close this little box and then reclick the same image, I get a larger applet box which is large enough to show the image. But I too must use the 'x' to close the window. This is from using IE8.

OK, this is what I experience using Firefox 8.

Went to:  "Alaska Railroad joins Association of American Railroads"

An Application Window opens after doing some screen activity.

The image mostly fills my screen (Image is 900px × 583px)

There is a "X" in the Lower Right that is the application "close" and closes the application

It's the exact issue zardoz mentions.  Also using IE8.  I am wondering why the old function of expanding pictures was dumped for this one, starting a few months ago, which doesn't work correctly in IE8, and requires clicking on the X to close the expanded picture, when in the old system, the expanded picture was always fast to load, never had a problem displaying, and you could collapse the expanded picture by clicking anywhere within the expanded image.  Here are some more examples, all of which happen when clicking on the picture in the main page to expand it to its full size.

Virtually every initial attempt (and some subsequent ones) have this display issue.  Even more weird is that the images will usually display okay after the first attempt.  Why would that be?
