Some of you say a million doesn't go as far as it used to; that might be true IF you are "used to" having a million dollars. When it comes to ONE MILLION DOLLARS, I guess I'm poor as hell right now. I'LL TAKE IT, and life would be a breeze as far as I'm concerned.

With unlimited funds I would build my own railroad from scratch as long as I could buy the land and there would be ABSOLUTELY no grade crossings of any tpye (all tunnels and under/overpasses). If I could build it across the entire US it would offer mostly passenger service and excursions; all I can say is GOODBYE AMTRAK. I'd live out of an "officers" special train.

That aside I would also donate a lot to charitable organizations; probably start my own if it wasn't for the railroad company.

That's exactly the reason I would buy UP or something similar. I couldn't bear to be idle.

As to other aspects of my life I would have a charitable foundation among my holdings that did the following three things:

1. Set up a fund to provide college scholarships for children of injured or deceased railroaders;

2. Set up a fund to provide assistance to the families of police officers, firefighters and/or EMT/Paramedics injured or killed in the line of duty; and,

3. Give charitable gifts to particularly deserving charities: MS Society, Shiriners Hospitals, St. Judes Children's Research Hospital, National Science FOundation, Smithsonian Institution and many others...

A million... I'd get out of this apartment and buy a house and I'd see to it that my daughter would never spend another summer vacation from school in a day-care center while I'm at work.

For me, every time I think I'd like to get back to something in big business, I read Dilbert and the feeling goes away.

So, I would acquire a well appointed private car for myself, family, if they wanted to go with me, and lease Big Boy's cars if I was taking a large group.

Also, a well appointed private jet for travel where trains don't go. (When otherwise on the ground, Mark gets to use the jet so he can get his old job back and commute to Waukesha).

Like CSX, I've got to put some money in the house. Oh yes, Matt want a Lambrogini.

All this would come after healthy contributions to Church, favorite politicians, and some very progressive NGO's

I figure to have some left, so I'll loan you the money to buy the UP. One condition. You'd have to pay out consulting fees to those who give advise on this forum.

I'd ride lots of trains, meet all of the people on the forum, and go to different countries to see foreign trains.

i would pay off my house..pay off my other outstanding bills... put the addition on that this place needs... and put what was left in the bank and live off the intrest.....with a CD only paying a few %..on a larg sum of money it would still be in the thounsands a month for a pay check....and if i got board of of sailing my RC sailboat..and flying my RC airplanes.... i would get a job someplace..doing something to keep myself occupide... all i would need to live confortable for the rest of my life would be a million after taxes... oh yea...i would leave the rail road in such a way that i would go down in CSX history lol.... but untill i hit the power ball...this is just a pipe dream...
but what a dream it is....

If I had a Million dollars...

I'd invest in in real estate and businesses to generate the maximum amount of return for my retirement. A $Million doesn't go nearly as far as it used to.

If I had unlimited wealth...

I would begin a leveraged buyout of the Union Pacific. Once I controlled UP I would replace the entire management team with people who know how to run a railroad. I wold run the company for 5 to 7 years and then retire after installing my hand picked successor. I would retain my seniority as an Engineer, Conductor and run any train I wanted to. It's good to be king.

In the meanwhile I would begin accumulating shares of CSXT and threaten to take it over. I would not take control, but I would make sure of a number of board seats. Using this as leverage I would effectively control CSX. I would run trains on CSX too and retain seniority.

I would also need a controlling interest in a steel mill or two and at least one good sized REIT and a few iron ore and coal mines.

Third, I would make sure I had several excellent business cars and a jet and a helicopter to fly me wherever I needed to go. Oh, and once "The Donald" collapses into bankruptcy, again, I'd buy his house in Florida and the one in California. I'd need a private island as well, with no railroads at all. In case I just needed a break. Oh and lots of beautiful women, that just goes with being rich, right?

Let me start by saying that a million dollars doesn't go as far as it used to. On the other hand unlimited funds is a different problem.

The dream I have in mind would probably take on the order of 3 to 5 million easy to do properly and not go cheap. Owning and running 4 private passenger cars. Not just any old passenger cars, let's be specific. All from the Milawukee Road roster, one of the Super Domes, one of the Sky Top sleeper lounges, and a diner. A power generator / storage car would round out my mini train.

Rather than stick to the original floor plans of each car, I would modify them slightly. The dome would have fewer but nicer chairs. Big soft ones that would swivel, allowing my guests to really enjoy the view. The downstairs would lose the through hallway in favor of 2 full width bedrooms in the in the center of the car and 2 smaller compartments on the ends. The sleeper lounge would have 4 compartments, instead of the original 8. The diner could have a full width kitchen, as there would be little need to go beyond it.
