Some European Intermodal Statistics for 2010

Total shipments in ~ 16 million TEU

The main trade association is the UIRR (International Union of combined Road-Rail). This association represents all the major continental Intermodal Operators, but not the maritime companies the biggest of which are European Rail Shuttle (Maersk), Transfracht, and BoxExpress.

The UIRR Statistics for 2010

Unaccompanied Combined Transport (UCT)

2,582,613 consignments +8% over 2009

Rolling Highway (Accompanied Combined Transport (ACT))

448,252 consignments +8% over 2009

Total

3,030,865 consignments +8% over 2009

6,061,729 TEUs +8% over 2009


Breakdown by type

75% of the consignments are Swap Bodies and containers

10% are Semi-Trailers (TOFC)

15% are Rolling Highway (RoLa)


Hupac, the largest International Operator in Europe (2nd overall) is now running monthly averages above 2008.

Hupac's statistics for 2010

Transalpine via Switzerland 422,399 consignments +9.5%
Transalpine via Austria 43,792 consignments +103%
non-Transalpine 213,875 consignments +12.4%
Rolling Highway 11,185 consignments +11.9%

Hupac transferred its Rolling Highway operations to its affiliate RAlpin on January 1st, 2011. Hupac, SBB, and BLS are the majority owners of RAlpin, Trenitalia owns 5%.
