wow!
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, June 27, 2004 7:29 PM
went and saw the 261 today going across the old RI. it was pretty effin impressive seeing it up close like that. since i'm only 23 i have never seen a...and i don't want to sound like a tool when i say it....real workin steamer like that. lol. but we went to geneseo and followed it almost all the way to bureau and back again, got a lot of pictures....although on a couple of disposables-as i'm not a professional picture taker. what i found to be REAL disturbing though was the rat race of cars and people and how freakin stupid they drove in order to keep pace with it going down the road since rt. 6 and the tracks are parallel for about 25-30 miles. tell ya what, nothing amazes me anymore. god that was neat tho. [:D] now i only wish i would've taken the time friday to see it going thru somewhere east of princeton at speed.

And the sound of the passing of the train was drowned out by the roar of the camera shutters....[:D]

Just wait until you get to see the Challenger 3985. Now that is impressive!!!

I've riden behind steam so many times, I've lost count.

Next Saturday is going to be a special event though. Steam double header!!! 261 and the Empress together for the day. I'll be there with camera in hand.

WOW is right, I saw 3985 in Freemont, NE on Saturday evening when it had stopped there for the weekend and will report more on my trip on Monday.

Nothing like being a part of the rat pack, I took out a highway sign when I was chasing the 2816......

Everytime I see the damage on my car it reminds me of the good times. [:)]

I recall riding the very last steam train into Boston's South Station and standing in the rear vestibule with Stanley Barriger III and I hanging out the rear coach diaphragm to see who would really be the very very last person to enter the station on a steam train. The power was a regular New Haven I-4 Pacific and it was a railfan special. It was a draw!

[#oops] Are you one of the ones Farmer is talking about?[swg]

I'm going to have Big Girl with me, and we will be taking our photos while standing still. We'll drive fast from spot to spot and wait. there aren't a lot of places where the road follows the tracks. the goal is not to run with the pack, but to jump in front of it.

It was well worth it though, about a half hour before it happened I got the photo in my profile....we were traveling at about 40MPH or so when that shot was taken.

I know what you mean about the rat pack. My wife and I were pacing N&W611 west toward Fort Wayne. We had it all to ourselves, with the van's sliding door open and me videotaping out the side. Then, when I got through a town, half a dozen people passed on double yellows, forced me off the road, and then slowed down to pace so I had to shoot into the sun, ruining my shot. It's a good thing we had seat belts on. Later that evening I got a nice shot of the setting sun glinting off of the boiler while it simmered in the yard.
