BNSF has begun putting their SD60Ms back into service. Yesterday SD60Ms 8169 and 8139 were the sole power on train M-NTWSUP (Northtown Yd. - Superior, WI). Another pair were reported heading SE out of the Twin Citites towards either Chicago or Galesburg.
Finally! Im surprised though with BNSF leasing SD70MACs and having sold the Dash8-40CWs to CN it kind of makes you wonder why the 60's are still on BNSF.

The reason that the SD60Ms are being returned to service versus the Dash8s being turned in is due to the cost of a CFR 1033 emissions upgrade. Competition keeps the price of a kit for an EMD lower. Also if the GE lacks EFI (most Dash8s don't have EFI) the GE upgrade is even more expensive. As long as CN keeps the used GEs that they purchased in Canada they won't have to upgrade them.

I'm surprised! I did not know they were O/S 'd, We see them on grain trains, in through consists and working the yard down at Wellington, all the time. They, admittedly most of them look pretty 'scruffy', but they seem to be out there making diesel smoke, and money for the railroad.
I know it's been said many ways, and a number of times around on this Forum "EMD's are less maintenance( they can take a lickin' and keep on tickin') cost hogs, than the GE's which cost much more to buy, and keep going."

cant wait to see em especially the 3 windows and 8197. get some more variety on the rails again. I dont like looking at the same thing all the time. It gets boring. hopefully they will be around Illinois quite a bit.
