What Breaks to Use.....Choices Choices.....

Every time I switch cars on MSTS I notice that when switching cars (slowing down and stopping quickly) the locomotive, or independent break, is more effective at slowing and stopping the train at a shorter distance than the Auto. Break is. Why is this?

The independent brake is a straight air brake--air pressure increases, the brake applies. Fast, and effective. It works only on the locomotive (one or more units). A lot of yard switching (particularly when it involves cars rolling free) is done without the train lines (no air in the cars), so there is no need to use the automatic brake.

you can get a few more PSI of breaking force on the loco breaks if you make a full service auto break application even with out cars with air behind you while switching.. just have to remember not to bail off after you set it till you stop..or you just undid the little extra stopping power you tried to get...
