Work Windows on the Simplon Route in Italy
Posted by beaulieu on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 11:25 AM

A serious increase in water leakage into the Galleria Elicoidale di Varzo (Varzo spiral Tunnel) on the Italian portion of the Simplon Route has necessitated daily except Saturday work windows starting June 14th. The windows run from 10am to 1pm and from 4pm to 7pm. No Eurocity trains are affected by this closure, and the Simplon Auto Shuttles are not affected either since they terminate at Iselle di Trasquera just short of the affected tunnel. These work windows are expected to last until December 11th, 2010.

SBB announcement of this disruption in English

RFI has just finished repairs to the Galleria Monte Olympino II, which hampered capacity on the Gotthard Pass line, and now this happens.

Water will seek it's own level....even when there is a tunnel in the way.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!

Yes the adjacent Divedro River drains the area, unfortunately there is a lot of Glacier fed water to drain.
